I have a 2021 GLC 300 and with 6000 mile on the clock my oil is half way down .. my C class estate never gulped like that never topped it up,yet the GLC is half gone on 6000 miles is this normal

Brand new car.

Is that on the display or on the dipsticck ?
What do you mean half gone ?

I suspect he is referring to the display, if it is a 2021 then it will be a facelift which don't come with a dipstick.

Not sure what you mean by “half way down”, however it should be mid-way between Min and Max on your dipstick five minutes after switching off the engine at its normal operating temperature. That assumes you have a dipstick.

Said another way, after a long drive turn off the engine on a level surface - a fuel stop on a long journey is ideal and the ground will be level and the engine at normal operating temperature - and wait 5 minutes before checking the oil. That’s about as long as it takes to fill up and pay.

Have you checked it multiple times before, and if you have have you watched reduce over time? When new and after a service I would expect it to be at the mid way point between Min and Max, and so if that’s where it is the I’d say it’s not used a drop.

I assume your GLC is a diesel? Has it been serviced recently? If you are checking your display and the oil level is sitting halfway between min and max at full operating temperature i.e. when the oil is hot then the level is fine. The reason I ask if it has been recently serviced is that dealers tend to under-fill the engine oil to be cautious as an excessive oil level can be damaging to diesel engines. If it is filled right up to the max line then there is a risk of the car being overfilled with oil and you'd get a high oil level warning on the display. As long as it is above the minimum line but below the maximum then there should be no issues, just keep checking it regularly as you normally would. I had two W205 (C Class) diesels and the oil was always at the halfway point at full temperature.

The GLC is a 2 litre petrol engine, my car is a 2021 having done around 4500 miles, I have only checked it via the display twice I cannot remember the reading but feel sure if the oil runs too low the car will let you know.

In addition to what others have said, OP says it's a brand new car but also says 2021? If it's a 2021 car it should have had at least one service by now, has it?

I don't understand the entry about oil 'half gone'. Many new MBs now say oil consumption of 1- litre per 1,000 miles (or something similar) is 'normal'; what does the handbook say?

No I bought it in February 2022 it is due a service looking at the display on the screen I presumed it would of read full ??

Service in 3 wks time I will ask at service dept wether the oil should read full.... as that is a lot of oil in 6000 mile lol.... Next time I go on a journey I will check it.

The Max line is the absolute maximum level the oil can be topped up to. As I said in a previous post as long as it is below the max line but above the minimum when hot you are fine. The 'sweet spot' for want of a better word is the midway line (halfway between min and max). After it has been serviced this is where I would expect to see the oil level sitting at. This has been the case for both W205 diesels I've owned. I'd say your GLC has hardly used any oil in 6000 miles if it is sitting midway when hot and on a flat surface.

To be honesI never looked at it until now as my 205 never had a display but a dip stick (c class ) so was a bit of a shock but I will see at service where they put the level

As you're clearly unsure whether or not the car is using oil, you might want to consider checking it on a regular basis, rather than relying (hoping) that the car will 'tell' you; that way you will pick up unusual patterns or any changes and might catch a problem before it develops. In all likelihood it's fine.

Thanks for the replies... checked the oil after a run n warmed up oil back to almost full.... weird that... I cannot see the section on mercedes me about oil level only Coolant and windscreen etc
