Hi All,
I’ve a recently acquired OM617 Turbo with a puzzling rattle towards the front of the engine bay.

Could anyone identify what’s causing it from the Youtube recording, please? Sorry it runs a bit long!

There’s also a leak in the fuel primer – see the last few moments of the video. What problems will this cause – it does seem a little sluggish but flies when the turbo kicks-in.

The second vid is my low mileage om617 na, just for a comparison.

Thanks very much in advance for any thoughts.

Cheers,
Paul

Try revving the engine high then let it fall back to idle. If the noise stops on the over-run it's injection related, if not then it's mechanical.

Check the vacuum pump as they can fail with catastrophic results.

Thanks, I'll go and give it a good rev!

How do I check the Vac pump? Would there be other indications of a problem, or could the clatter be the only symptom?

I'll stick a stethoscope on it.

Cheers,

Paul

I recently did the valve gaps and noticed the chain tensioner sat a little 'off'.
Related, perhaps?

It might have reached the end of it's travel due to chain and guide wear.
