Hi everyone,

Have owned my 'Gleaming Beauty' for more than 12 years and, in that time, she's been an utterly reliable performer on a daily basis. As any owner of the W116 series 6.9 will testify, a thorough understanding of its mechanical features are a must and, whatsmore, can be helpful, in maintaining these models on a commercially viable basis.

I would be very much interested in exchanging ideas and hints with any 116 owner, whether that be a 280, 450 or, indeed, the venerable 6.9's, and I can also be contacted on my website, namely topklasse.net.au

It is hoped that Administration and/or Moderator do not find objection with this post. Regards, Styria

Welcome. You have a great car, a few photo's would be good and some details.

Likewise, welcome to the forum - would also love to see some pics :)

Wow! You don't do things by halves down under...
It takes me weeks of contemplation and "research" to change a fuel filter, never mind removing cylinder heads. :o

Welcome to the forum!

Karl

Hi Karl, it's been some time since I have been on this site. I will post more details, but in the meantime, I have repainted "Gleaming Beauty". One should be able to see more details here.

Two Tone 6.9

I have always felt that 6.9s were never special enough to set them aside from the more mundane models. Sure, mechanical specifications were special enough, but other than that and the 6'9 badge on the bootlid, there was nothing to indicate that 'here was indeed a car that could become a classic' at future times.

The trouble was, and is even more so today, that there is nothing that makes them different to the other models. Forget mechanicals for the time being. In my opinion, the factory could well have considered spraying 6.9s in a two tone colour combination. That should have been standard, with a single colour being an exrea cost option. I know that's going about things in a reverse way, but it is a belief on my part. I have recently repainted "Gleaming Beauty" in a discreet two tone combination, and if members are interested, I am able to post photos in due course, or I can refer you to my website. Interested in opinions. Regards Styria

Two Tone 6.9

It's been a long time since I visited this website - unfortunately, there are so many hours per day, so many days per week etc.......I am sure most will appreciate those sentiments. In addition, I have been busy with my website (topklasse.net.au) in an effort to build up membership and to also turn it into a site that caters not only for 116 and 107 owners, but also to motoring enthusiasts in general. It is to some extent still a work in progress, but I am getting there. I must admit to having a real soft spot for British cars, having owned (and still do) three ROVER P5 Coupes (being restored), as well as two ROVER 3500S models (badly undervalued in this country). Of course, I have my 450SEL6.9 (bought about 17 years ago), as well as a 450SE (1977) and a 1989 420SEL (great car).

Anyway, that's enough of myself. I have in earlier posts referred to painting in 2 tone, and that has been carried out and the car finished. I am providing those interested with a link to the subject on the M100 site for your perusal and evaluation. I am happy with my choice of colours - in my opinion, the two colours needed to be strong in their own right, yet match each other once applied. I was determined to use the crease line to divide the two colours, without the addition of a coach line, and I also wanted to avoid the obvious separation areas such as roof from body, or below the rubbing strips along the side of the car. Regards Styria

Thanks guys. Did you take the opportunity to follow the thread on the M100 site ? Pictures of my Gleaming Beauty are in fact on the second page, but I will endeavour to post some more in due course - that is, of course, there will be enough interested members from your site.

BTW, is it true that there are only 17 450s on the road in Great Britain? If that is true, that's not only a truly remarkable, but also disturbing figure. What I find from experience, many 6.9s have really suffered the fate of total neglect, and for a car of that class, and also expense when new, that is really hard to take. One matter of concern in OZ country is the cost of spare parts - considered to be quite horrendous. Regards Styria

The Chairman of the Mercedes-Benz Club has fine examples of both the 6.3 and 6.9. Both are regularly used for UK and European trips. I have posted a link to your site on the Mercedes-Benz Club forum to show him what you've been up to. Hope you don't mind.

No, not at all. I tend to think that TK (topklasse) is an interesting enough site for people not only wanting to read the many posts we have in our forum section, but we'd also hope that some would actually want to join and perhaps even contribute.

I suspect that you are referring to Ian Keers, with his nice 6.9. I have seen his contributions on the M100 site but, believe it or not, he did join TK some two years ago. However, he experienced some difficulties when registering, and unfortunately I have not heard from him since.I do appreciate your kind offer. Regards Styria

6.9 valve grind and de-coke

Hi Aquanaut, that is a splendid idea of yours. I will post pictures in due course, but will need to find them in my Photobucket files first. There are about 3300 files in my accounts. In the meantime, I might just submit a pictorial coverage of work carried out on my 6.9 - she's been christened Gleaming Beauty - always has been, and always will be. This work was carried out about two and a half years ago, and the details may appeal to some members on your sire.

The thread carries about one hundred post from memory, and what remains to be said at this stage is that the work turned out to be 100%. Subsequently, I performed the same work on another 6.9 that I sold on the proviso that the car was refurbished and checket out A1 mechanically. That's another story. In the meantime, enjoy the thread hereunder. Regards Styria

Valve Grind & De-coke on 6.9 - Topklasse Discussion Board

I am now living in Sydney. I looked at a silver 6.9 back around 1998 or so. It seemed like an ok example but decided not to pursue it.

Back in London, the new owner of my S600 bought himself a 6.9 too....excellent fuel bills!

I will drop you an email through your website.

Cheers

does no one else feel this is bordering on spam?
