I am helping with the collection of a 7.3 tonne Unimog motorhome that is being shipped into Southampton in a couple of weeks time. It is UK registered but needs a MOT on arrival. It is a class 4 MOT but needs a place that does larger vehicles such as RVs and motorhomes. Can anyone recommend somewhere near Southampton - ideally a bit out of the centre and ideally near the A36 road towards Salisbury. Thank you.

Was this the vehicle that was in South Africa a few months ago and needed transport to the port there ?

I'd be surprised if there wasn't a council run test centre near the port given the amount of commercial vehicles that use the area, the council centre will almost certainly be able to do a Class 4 test for you. Might be worth a Google or visit to Southampton Council website.

Could the MOT test be booked closer to home?

In other words, as long as it is pre-arranged and taken there for the test I don’t think it has to be where the vehicle arrives in the UK.

I did think about that - but thought it would be stretching the legality a bit. You are allowed to drive an untaxed unmot'd car to a test - but I would have thought that 100+ miles would be stretching it a bit. The vehicle is going to attract attention because of its size and low speed so I think it is better to play safe.

Indeed it is - finally managed to get that sorted and through customs in Durban. It has been a mission.

Also the fact that you have an MOT booked doesn’t protect you if you are stopped by the police if there are vehicle faults .

Good point. There has been so much to overcome to get this far it is unbelievable - so doing the last bit of the journey properly - even if it involves a stop over to get MOT issues sorted is by far the easy bit.

I imported an 8 year old E211 from Jersey back to the UK via Portsmouth. The MOT was booked at my local garage In Carmarthen , drove it back home on Jersey plates and insurance then 9 miles to the MOT garage. Suspect the issue is getting insurance cover for the vehicle before you get the MOT and then UK registration which took me about 4 weeks before the V5 with Reg No arrived. Then the DVLA screwed up and issued the wrong Registration number as it had been originally registered in the UK before I exported it to Jersey 4 years earlier and it should have been given its original reg No. I had had new plates made before they found out , needless to say they didn’t reimburse me for the cost of extra set of plates 😟

Can you trailer it?
I’d have thought given the weight in the title that would be quite a challenge.

Not impossible but logistically difficult and expensive!

Tenuous link but we’ve been working our way up the western isles over the last couple of years and on every island we have encountered German registered Unimogs. They look like they could withstand a nuclear attack!

This one was built specifically to take to Africa and go anywhere; it has been all over the southern half of Africa in the last ten years. It does have some "occupant safety" features, not sure it would survive nuclear though :D

To update for interest, the Unimog arrived at Southampton and we collected it yesterday. It started first time and ran fine. We took it for a MOT in Romsey and it passed which was great. Then 120 miles west to Devon without any problems.
