Went to an auction today to buy my sister and brother in law a car...
Whilst I was there a mint tourmaline green R plate C240 Sport, one lady owner with 50k miles (warranted miles) caught my eye. Bodywork immaculate apart from one pin dent on passenger door, no rust at all. Black leather interior, again immaculate, electric folding mirrors, a/c, full history etc etc. I dropped out of the bidding at £2,450. Can't help thinking thats a lot of car for the money and I should have bought it. Went for £2550 in the end

Sounds like a good car.

Not 'cheap' as such (£2.5k for a W202 C240), but more of a car that you'd want to own. I'm sure you know what I mean :o

There's always others out there though :)

I saw a really nice C249 estate on the W go for good money at Paddock Wood recently when I was buying my parents a Civic!

W 2000, 40k miles, 1 owner in silver and completely spotless. My mum had decided that she would be able to drive it without any difficulties but the civic I was after was 3 cars in front. Had the estate gone through first then they would have had another Merc. It was Classic spec but seemed to have everything bar leather (which mum didnt want) and it finally sold at £2700. For £3k all in it would have been a very nice buy.

Acouple of months later the Civic has been a totally faultless joy to drive and I am still not sure I got the right car that day.

Sounds exactly the same spec as mine - except mine isnt a colour that looks like mouthwash.

To be fair it was quite a dark greeny/ black colour not the kermit green I've seen some C classes in

Yes, it looked nice but was far too expensive!

It was a nice green, almost BRG but for resale green is not the most popular.

It was too expensive, on reflection I probably got carried away bidding that far. £1700 was the figure I had in my head...

Also tried to get the 6k mile automatic S40 for my sister, but that did silly money too. :wallbash:

Think of all those spark plugs you won't have to change to change and no harmonic balancer issue either ;) Did it have the later tiptronic box or the straight 5 speed auto? There was a big change in spec around 98/99 the earlier cars are less desirable and fetch less money.:dk:

Being an 98 R-Plate it wouldnt have had the tip-tronic box. Only late 99's/00 have it.

Absolutely, but had it done trade price and not retail money, it would have made sense....

Blackbushe is far too expensive these days. People get carried away too easily at auctions, as my own experience shows!

You did the right thing, set your limit and stick to it, if you had bid more then so might the other guy, at least one of you bought a good car a a fair price, next week it could be you, still, I feel your frustration that's why some car go for silly money at auction
