A170 CDI
Hi, I am new to this forum. I have just inherited a rather nice 2004 A170 CDI which has only done 33,000 miles. It runs like a little dream, however it sound a little loud and lumpy on idle, is this common or will I need to get it fixed.

Like most Merc diesels when cold they sound pretty awful, like there's something terminal about to happen (the wife's B180 makes wheezing noises and is very rattly, but once it warms up sounds just fine!).

What sort of gearbox has it got as the Autotronic variants seem to be a bit noisier in my experience when cold....

Cheers,
Dan.

Thanks Dan,

Its a manual, lovely little car but a little bit lumpy and juddery in low revs. Does that make sense?

Since you don't really know how the car has been driven. EG lots of short stop journeys to the shops and back.

Why not give the fuel system a clean, and maybe swap the fuel filter etc: This may or may not work to some degree to see if this cures the juddering. Or reduce it some what.

The A170 is a Moose, very rough and agricultural but a willing motor that will return 50mpg readily.

Give it a strong dose of injector cleaner and drive it.

Hello

My Brothers wife has a A170Cdi bought it after we enjoyed our A210 so much.

As above its a tractor really, take it for a good Italian tune up. Sounds like its probably done lots of short, stop start trips.

It will be louder on start up for a few mins until warm, and then well...its still loud really. Just how they are..

You should easiliy see 50mpg from a manual my wife got 44mpg from ours and it was 2.1 petrol.

Welcome by the way :)

Hi,

At low speeds/revs I get a little judder until the car gets to higher revs when its very smooth!!!

all A170 will become lumpy on idle sooner or later, but not at 33k miles. usually leaking injector. better have it sorted asap because if you carry on driving like this, especially that it's smooth when you rev it, can lead to further damage to cylinder head.

Get it plugged in firstly. This will save you the guesswork. A Star diag machine is best.
