I've got a a250e, the range on electric when I first got it used to be 44mile with full charge. Now I'm getting on the display maximum 30mile after a full charge. Now I know its winter and using the heater will draw a bit of battery but surely it shouldn't be a quarter of the range. Plus will it be the same in the summer while using Aircon?

The battery range may be affected by the temperature of the battery itself especially if the car is not garaged overnight.

Unless the car has a heat pump, then yes, the heater really will be robbing that much range. A/C is more efficient than resistive heating so you won’t see such a penalty In summer.

I’d guess that the heater is roughly 4kW or so, based on my C350e and the fact that when I use pre-heat, the 3.8kW it draws from the mains isn’t enough to keep up with the demand, so you can do some fag-packet calculations from there. If the journey is an hour, you’ll use (very roughly) 4kWh from your battery.

And as @grober says, low temps hurt battery performance and capacity too. If you can, always pre-heat before trips in cold weather...assuming it’s plugged in of course.

Thank you for the replies, its now pretty much summer with outside temperatures of 22c and the range still has not got above 34miles. I only drive to and from work/school runs so 30mph top speed apart from one stretch of road which is duel carriageway but I put it into battery level there to save charge. This really is starting to bug me as the selling point for me was the magic 44mile range.

Only suggestions I can make is to try raising the tyre pressures a couple of psi above basic level and selecct maximum brake regen if this setting is available on your model??

Have you turned the climate control off completely? I ask, as on our C350e, even with ambient temps nice and comfortable, if you leave it on, even with AC off, it still hurts range. I don’t drive ours much and did ask the missus if she’d turned off the climate and she said yes….but she hadn’t. I spotted it when driving the car the other week and turned it off properly. That put the battery range back to 13 miles again. Pathetic I know, but it’s the best it’s ever done, from new.

So was the car advertised as having a 44 mile range, and when you first hit the car you could consistently achieve a 44 mile range? If that’s right then that’s exceptional.

Consistently achieving a real world 34 miles doesn’t sound too bad to me, compared to an advertised 44 mile range, but I have no direct experience of such things.

What has the main dealer said?

I'll be honest I am slightly disappointed with the range. But the car it's self is really good. I love driving in electric mode, and if anything its making me think of full electric for my next car.

I'll give this a go on Monday morning. Far to much beer to be drank while watching the football this weekend. Thanks for the tip

It makes me smile when hearing that people cry about 34 miles real range for an A-Class, when the more expensive, higher class C350e only has 6-8 miles real range in winter and 10-13 miles in summer and the owners are told it’s completely normal and have to live with it. 🤪

That’s shocking 😳

you’ll never get your money back and you won’t save the planet so what’s the point ? 🤷‍♂️

@Dickster @seekay Let's put it in perspective. The C350e is quite an old design of PHEV with a MUCH smaller battery than the A250e, and without adjustable levels of regen, hence the very limited range when compared. Technology moves on, and every new generation of PHEV for the same model is more efficient and does more miles than the previous generation (see BMW 330e for example) - the PHEV of the new C class has a WLTP range of around 60 miles (real world, we don't know yet)

PHEVs are a transition technology and like current EVs, have very specific use cases, so if you usage is outside of the use case (in the case of a C350e if you're not doing a very short commute where you can plug in at the office as well), then a PHEV is not for you. However, if you are charging the PHEV regularly, then you can make a contribution towards improving air quality when you drive on battery power.

PHEVs typically make sense financially for company car drivers when the vehicles are brand new, as the Benefit in Kind tax savings can be a lot. There can also be huge savings on parking and other charges in cities for PHEV drivers too. Living in London, I saved over £5,000 in various taxes and parking charges in the first year of buying my used C350e.

However, for a lot of private motorists, a secondhand PHEV doesn't make financial sense (whether it's from Mercedes or any manufacturer) and they would be better suited to a regular petrol or diesel model.

Hi all

New to the site and just want to get some feed back on range before I possible take the car back to mercedes to be checked out.
Currently the car is showing just 15 miles after a full charge. Now i know that the range drops when its cold but reading on the net most people talk of it dropping to mid 20s. This seems rediculously low and the car isnt even a year old yet. Whats peoples experiance.

Having said all that still love this car.

Many thanks for your feed back in advance

Hi John, I've had my a250e just over a year now, the least amount of range I've had is about 26 miles after a full charge. But that is in the depths of winter-1ish. I've learnt to live with it and when it's cold put the car into battery level and use gogo Juice until it gets warmer. Not ideal.

Thanks for the reply. Its interesting, the wifes car so she is getting to and from work on battery unly which is ideal, Having read a few forums the predicted range is not good. I can back this up. I can back this up after monotoring her usage today, It showed 15 miles range on a full charge, She did 22.8 milrs today with 17% of the battery left. The app is saying that its returning 2.9 mpkWh so I cant complain. SInce we;ve had the car we have now done 7772 miles. with a couple of 400 mile trips each way and we have returned an average of97.4 milrs to the gallon. 5.1 mpkWh. Absolute perfect use of a hybrid.
