A45S to get 421bhp

Oh cool, another “if it ain’t a v8 it ain’t a real amg” thread.

well if you want to get pedantic, the last real AMG was probably the W202 C36

Latest AMG four-pot is 'most powerful ever' | PistonHeads

Can’t wait for the first A45s to hit the streets and folk start asking where they can get it mapped to 500+ with a pops , bangs and crackles (might as well have and flames too) remap :D

Second question , will it sound better if I remove all the cats and weld in scaffold poles :dk: :D

Whatever though its serious power from a 2.0 lump! Sadly all performance cars attract their fair share of modders and tuners

When you read what AMG have done to that engine , and no doubt powertrain, to get a very impressive and one assumes reliable 421 bhp from the engine sticking a map on it doesn’t sound like a recipe for longevity, but then the “enthusiast” will hope to have removed the map and moved on before the engine does an impression of a grenade and be very pleased with themselves. Wouldn’t touch one of these , or several other AMGs, second hand with a barge pole unless it came from MB with a full MB service history and a 2 year AMG Warrenty.

Yes you have to be very careful now. So many people putting on a 'cheeky little map'. Its the normal makes as well not just AMG, look how many on here asking about mapping their CDI

To be fair it’s virtually every car with a turbo. I had a Golf R (briefly) and I wouldn’t touch one of those either outside of the dealer network. Lots of halfwits think it’s great map or fit a “tuning” box , rag the ar@# of them and put back to stock before they move them on and pretend it’s never been touched. Some folks are upfront but many aren’t. Folks will eventually catch on and residual values will drop like a stone as this type of car will be an absolute liability in a few years time.

I believe Acid at MSL was getting more reliable horsepower out of the old A45's back in 2014 with mapping
Those turbo cars really respond well to a simple map

Who said it’s got to have a V8 to be a real AMG? If comes with an AMG badge from the factory it’s an AMG :dk:
Absolutely, totally, agree!!

No doubt he can but depends on what you term reliable , 1000, 10000, 100000 miles? I’m sure the collective brain power of the AMG engineering department could do with a few tips as they obviously don’t know how to get the most out of what they design and build. The point is virtually every one of the tuning firms websites say “the map can easily be removed and put back to stock” etc ie when it’s playing up and you want it fixed under warranty, or when you want to sell it and aren’t prepared to be up front about it.

Hmmm....

421bhp from the 2L turbo 4-pot is the same as from the 5.5L N/A V8 in Angie’s R172 SLK55.

I wonder which one will last longest?

I agree totally Andy. I'd be interested to know the longevity of some of those mapped cars too.
Very devious work to remove maps and claim its been stock all its life too.
How to check the past history (re mapping) of a potential AMG purchase?

Answer is it’s very hard unless you know the car, it’s owner etc. If I was MB I would be checking the ECU at every service , if they aren’t already, that would mean that the map had to be added and removed several times to try and hide it under warranty. Buying from MB at least gets you 2 years peace of mind with the AMG Warrenty

When my car goes into MB for its next service I want a check and written report on the engine and gearbox software and the exhaust system and cats. Down the road being able to prove its “standard” and serviced correctly will be a good investment.

I’m sure if serviced correctly they should last as long. The problems come down the road when they are out of warranty and owners start to scrimp on servicing cost, following the addition of a super duper 500 bhp map for £250 :dk:

I used to have an A45 and the owners forum was full of people having problems coincentally after they had re-mapped the car. No difference to overclocking your CPU, you can get more speed but there is a price

I’m always interested in the “mapping” threads, particularly when involving cars still under manufacturers warranty from new. In the AMG world, as well as all other performance marques, the engines are in a state of tune that the factory believe will lead to as few issues as possible in their intended lifecycle of the engine, or that can be managed via a comprehensive and regular servicing schedule. Yes turbo cars are easy to coax more power out of but that then leads to the compromise of possibly shortening engine life. This may not have been too important up until recently but manufacturers are now making ECU’s that are more secure and passcode protected and that can have changes, or attempted changes, made to them identified during a service so I am led to believe.

I think the main thing here is the ability to brag about how many BHP you have regardless of how badly the added power has impacted the drivability of the car. I was like this a while ago when I was into Impreza’s but after taking some advice from an experienced Impreza driver I went down another route.

If you want to drive your car quicker go on a few track days and pay for the driver training that is offered at most. The guidance of an experienced driver is worth the investment and they will be able to teach you better cornering and acceleration techniques as well as better car control and smoother lines. I found that adding power was no longer required as I was better able to extract the performance from my cars as they left the factory.

Effectively having the most BHP is no guarantee of getting from A to B in the quickest time :D

Personally I find it hilarious, ReMaps are already out there for the A35. No doubt folk will be queuing up for some “cheap” power in the knowledge it’s “undetectable” by MB and won’t affect their warranty or residual values. Another one to avoid out of warranty.

FWIW without wading into the whole remap side of things, I previously got myself a gla 45 for 18 months when I didn't have a big enough driveway for a grown up car, and that thing was a blast to drive with 375hp (no tune), had nil problems squeezing every last ounce of power from that baby engine. adding around 40 to 50 hp (stock) to that sort of vehicle will be a God send. If AMG can further improve that exhaust , then it will be a stunning machine. The exhaust was already great with proper whip cracks on up shifts, and mental crackles on downshifts. All improved by quite mediocre cabin sound damping = a teenage ASBO holder's wet dream. Grown up AMG, it is not ...
