Guys,

As I recently bout a 95 model e320 coupe I had a thought....

let me set off the alarm and hear what it sounds like...just in case somebody tries having a go !!!

The alarm fob is square and actually has two buttons one with a depression and the other raised.

When you press the raised button the alarm goes into panic mode....

wait for it....very faint siren ....barely noticable..

I opened the bonnet and checked the siren next to ABS unit - this has a key hole in the back which I turned anticlockwise.

Now the siren produces a faint whining whilst the other tiny siren still sounds ( near the battery somewhere ? )

If I arm the alarm now it just goes off after 5 seconds ?? I have switched the main siren back to its original position !!!

Does this mean that the siren is knackered and if so will it be a stealer only part ?? How much will they do me for ??

Any help welcome...

It is not a stealer part at all, AFAIK there is no oem alarm for the W124, everything is aftermarket. MB UK were pressured into fitting alarms by insurance companies and consumer groups etc so they fitted some, but the parts have long-since dried up. You should be able to get a generic alarm siren to replace the one you have. If it were me, I'd find somewhere like a decent ICE shop to remove ALL traces of the alarm and then fit a new alarm system.

Cheers Shude...always reply promptly....

Is it easy to get the wiring out of the siren ?? How do I go about doing this ?

Any idea how many wires control this siren so I can find a generic siren to fit...

The alarm fobs have actually got the Mercedes logo on them and so I guess this is one of the few they fitted.

I'm afraid I don't know anything about that.

Don't get me wrong, they were fitted by MB UK, but they're not oem parts. They're UK only and they used some fairly decent aftermarket stuff for the alarm parts but here we are about 10-15 years later and if you ask anyone with a W124 they'll tell you the alarm has broken at some point :)

If you PM me your VIN I will see if there is anything in the catalogue for your car. The W202 had a more integrated alarm in it from 1995 onwards, the W124 coupe might well have something similar if it's from that era.

Went to the stealers yesterday for some bits - asked them about the alarm.

Apparantly it wwas fitted as an accessory by Mercedes at time of purchase and was a Scorpion sourced unit branded MB.

Told him about the siren not working ...he said would take two hours taking out and then sending off for repair - all in all around £200 !!!

I said I'd get back to him....

I opened up the alarm unit and found quite a bit of moisture inside - dried this out and took the siren part out by disconnecting the two wires to it.

Checked with a multimeter and was getting 4V when alarm was being triggered at these wires ( one black one red) .

popped over to Maplin and picked up a weatherproof siren for £12. Although the recommended voltage is 6-12V I tried it and it sounds good enough.

A small hole at the back of the original unit through which the two wires were fed and soldered to new small siren which itself was bolted to an existing component nearby.

job done !!!!

That's what I expected, although it's fitted by the dealer it's still an aftermarket item so the parts aren't on the EPC and no-one holds stock of them any more, I think even Scorpion deny knowledge of them...

Well done! I thought a different siren would be good enough, sirens are sirens aren't they? :)
