Car went in for it's first mot earlier today(kwik fit) and failed on both rear tyres having cords exposed on inner edges( I was invited to inspect them via the inspection pit and they we're indeed as stated).Less than 4 weeks/900 miles ago my care went in for a warranty repair(nox sensor) at my local mb dealership and whilst there had a free health check with no advisories or mention of the rear tyres , question is,although tyres are not covered under mercedes approved used warranty mot failure guarantee(car was bought 7 months ago from said dealership and only covered 4,000 miles in that time)had I have found out during the health check about the rear tyres I could have taken it up at the time, should I expect the dealership to honour the cost of the 2 tyres, what do you guys think?

I'm not sure what the dealer should do to appease you, however, I would definitely be asking to see their documented findings from their so called health check and take it from there.

Incidentally, it might be wise to withhold your reasons for the request until you have the evidence in your hands.

Assuming the car has been driven 'normally' since you purchased it 4000 mls ago, it should have been obvious at the time of purchase, so as the buyer in your place I would have seen and negotiated for two new tyres.

Depending on the tyres ( and a few other factors as well ) they may have well been very serviceable 4'000 Miles ago,,,,but having said that, 4'000 miles is still 4'000 miles.. LOL. I would be more worried as to why there is so much wear showing on the insides, that the wire is showing. There is something wrong with the alignment, in my opinion..

Hi,as a precaution I had 4 wheel alignment done at same time as rear tyres today and 2 of the 4 we're out of tolerance so should stop future inner tyre wear.

Yes driven normally(I'm 56 so no boy racer:-))-not obvious to me st time of purchase as both the rear tyre wear was on the inside.

As above.

When an MB dealer carry out a health check, there's a ln official form with tickboxes to tick, and from memory also the thread depth at 3 locations across the thread is measured and recorded on the form.

I have the healthcheck still on email and will be ringing the dealership in the morning.

My work does a “free health check” if your car does not need to go on a ramp it wont, i get .30 of an hour (18 mins) to perform this including putting all the info on the computer, topping up your screenwash + a few other checks, make a short video and send to the customer, we are payed a time bonus, and time less than .30 we make money anything longer money gets taken off us! It will be a very quick check and if its right at the edge it wont have been noticed, but you have done 4000 miles, i dont really understand what you want the dealer to do! :dk:

Hi,I have the healthcheck on email and no mention of cords showing on inner edge of rest tyres and only 900 miles ago so must have been evident at time of health check.

Hi ,you misread my post-900 miles ago was the healthcheck by the mb dealership I bought the car from 4,000 miles ago and the tyres we're part of the health check.

Still though 900 miles, thats almost 1/12 of your tyres lifespan, it kinda just looks like your trying to get something for nothing and if something in the future comes up this will be on your file

So the unusual tyre wear could well have been caused by the geometry been 'off' at time of sale ?

I would speak to the supplying MB dealer in a very calm and conciliatory manner and asking them what they feel is a reasonable response. ANYTHING I got back from them I would treat as a result - as I would normally expect after 7 months and 4000 mls the tyres would me down to me. Frankly they are so cheap and you now know why they were worn, I'd be tempted to just get the new tyres and move on.

Not trying to get something for nothing-would have had the tyres replaced at time of health check if they we're brought to my attention which is the point of a health check.

Silly thing is, I expect that the cords could have worn through within the last 900 miles - and strictly speaking you only need 1.6mm of tread over the central 3/4s of the tyre - so entirely feasable that they would have been MOT-legal just a few hundred miles before, especially if the geo was out or not inflated to spec etc.

Surprised they didn’t recommend them to be replaced though (if nothing other than a sale opportunity!) but I guess inner shoulder wear is perhaps slightly harder to spot/quantify than overall minimum tread depth?

At least you’ve not been ripped off. And I guess Kwik-fit aren’t likely to miss an opportunity for a worn tyre that needs replacing either! :)

Chalk it up and take as experience, and once a week check your own tyres as I’m sure you’d check levels, lights, wipers before long journeys

Hi Will, frustrating thing is I would have had them replaced if I'd known condition of tyres at time of health check and you are probably correct in saying kwik fit wouldn't miss an opportunity for tyre sales(although they we're perfectly correct in failing the mot because of the inner wear).

Hi I do all the usual weekly checks but wouldn't have found the inner edge wear(you would need a ramp to check for that)
