The fairer half is thinking of chopping the Jeep in for a mini .
What are the panel's thoughts on a 09-10 Mini Cooper Auto 1.6... Diesel or petrol? Economy is not really an issue. Getting the better engine is.

I bought my OH a Cooper convertible petrol on an 08 plate two years ago now. Must admit it has been great for her although she does VERY few miles. Afraid i dont know much about the auto boxes but i think there was a change in the box somewhere around that time. Also test drove a Cooper diesel which was fine as well - quite torquey.
Whatever you buy i always think its a good idea to get the first mot done a month before its due at a mini dealership - that way any problems will be sorted under warranty.
She is also looking to change.Going the other way though[so to speak before anyone chips in!] to a Discovery.
We did test drive a Cooper SD recently which was a hoot.
Diesel Cooper is £20 a year tax.

Can't help regarding the autobox, but my wife had a couple of R56 Cooper S's and a good mate works at Plant Oxford and has had a hew MINI's on their employee scheme.

Putting engine choice to one side for a moment, the first thing is that spec's of used cars vary wildly due to the wide range of options available. Personally, I'd look for one with the Chili Pack as that includes lots of things you'll probably want (it'll make it easier to sell later, too). The standard audio system is, imo, feeble so if "reflexgirl" ( ;) ) likes her sounds, look for one with the audio upgrade. The Visibility Package (auto wipers, etc.) is nice to have too, and if you're lucky you might find a car with heated windscreen as well which is good if the car lives outside. The chrome trim packages (both external and internal) brighten the car up a good deal. The Automatic Climate Control didn't work properly on either car my wife had (both from new, both had multiple dealer attempts to fix it), so I wouldn't bother with that. Avoid anything with Sports Suspension if it's on 17-inch runflats. On anything other than billiard-table smooth surfaces it redefines the term "pain in the a*se" and makes the car very difficult to place accurately if pressing on on bumpy roads.

As far as engines go, both petrol and diesel seem to be ok, but the Dooper can achieve 60+ mpg with ease and is pleasantly torquey.

Other than that, despite the car being very similar in outside dimensions to a MkIV Golf, boot space is very poor and the rear seats are cramped. There's no doubt that they can be fun to drive and reasonably cheap to own (an 09/10 car will still have 2 or 3 years of free servicing left if the original purchaser took the TLC package), but if practicality is needed I'd look elsewhere.

BTW, if you haven't found it yet, the MINI2 forum is a good resource.

I have had 3, a 2004 cooper a 2007 cooper s and at the mo have a 2011 cooper s. the newer engines are better as they are more economical. If fuel consumption is not a problem then you will enjoy the s. short journeys around town and stop start driving and my computer is reading 32mpg. Long runs are seeing 38 ~ 42 mpg. It's great fun and rides okay. If you get a newer one you could spec normal tyres and not having run flats on improves the ride. I agree with having chilli pack and the sun roof is a nice option. The harmen Karden is a nice upgrade and I especially like the jcw body kit which I have had on the last two. The heated screen works well, basically 2 mins in frost and its clear. The hands free is average and I have used better as is the sat nav.

Drive one, the suspension is very hard particularly on the run flats.

My ex had a "Park Lane" brand new, I just didn't find it comfortable at all.

My daughter just collected her new Mini today.

Mini One, 1.6 petrol, Pepper Pack, factory tinted rear glass. TLC option.

It's a nice wee car - I hate the interior with a passion.

Mini is a great car but with an auto box it's a dog, total mismatch of ratios it just does not suit the car, it's always hunting trying to find the right gear. Seen loads of these come back with complaints about the auto box but they are all exactly the same nearly as bad as the MB 7 speed :D

If it has to be an auto then this is not one of the best

I had an auto loaner once and it was terrible. The manuals are so much nicer taking everything else out of the equation.

The ride is very hard, diesels are noisy, boot space absent, rear space absent, fussy rattly interior but hey they have sold thousands so some must like them.

We have a Mini Cooper Auto - 59 plate. It's our second one and its about to be replaced by a Mini Countryman (manual). The auto box in the cooper is fine, anything you want to know OP give me a shout. As for run flats, they were an option from 2009, mine hasn't got them, the previous Cooper did. I prefer the non run flats.

Bear in mind that there is not much space in the Mini, so if you plan to use it for more than two adults, maybe think again.

I know lots about Mini's I have built several of them, on the other hand I don't know anything about BMW's :-)

I bought the missus a 2011 Clubman One (1.6L) with a few options not too long ago. She is a singer and the extra boot space, whilst not much does come in handy one the seats have been folder down. The suicide door is a bit mental but actually very useful in car parks and driveways (less on road) for getting the nephew in and any of her gig stuff (and the dog!)

Got the service pack etc so all good.

It was used - 20k 1st year miles but she only does 8k so fine really. Build quality good.

I paid 500 deposit and then it costs me 200 a month in payment and insurance, so pretty cheap motoring.

HTH

Echo what has been said. Generally they're reliable trendy little cars. The ride is way too hard for my preference and they are seriously noisy on the motorway.

A million other small cars I would buy before this one even though my other half loves them.
