Are Bank Drafts Ok Now - Anything To Look For ?

i agree with the last 2 posts, i don't think a bank will confirm the validity of a bankers draft these days without taking it to your local branch - well at least HSBC won't.

HSBC need only a few hours notice to issue a draft. He can ask for it to be drawn and ready at a branch of his choice.
I wouldn't wait until the day to ask them for one, because a signatory might not be available.
It's years since I needed a draught and the bank required 24Hrs notice, but as they like me did one for £75k within 2Hrs. :thumb:

It's not Dave that's drawing the draft...it's the purchaser. HSBC deffo don't need 24hrs. Got the teeshirt:D

:) Nice buyer is ahead of me, asked which branch, will sort tuesday and coming up to collect weds - I feel a bit naked with no SL and no pinball (Im missing the pin already and it only went this morning) BUT just been for a long trip into NWales in the Aston and the world is a happier place.

So, he arranges for it to be ready at the branch next to yours...you go with him when he picks it up.....Bob's your uncle!!
Yes I too can vouch for HSBC and its ease in terms of time in getting a draft issued. So long as the HSBC branch isn't small one it takes around an hour- did for me anyhow when I bought my last car few months back

The process at Lloyds is quick. Counter staff check ID and write out the cheque then the supervisor checks ID and cheque and give it to you. 10 mins.

Sorry I didn't make myself clear - but a Building Society Cheque (often called a Counter Cheque not a personal cheque) is the same as a Bank Draft....once issued can't be stopped...only difference is what they call them..lol

They are larger than personal cheques and have to be signed by a member or staff. So they are cheques issued from the Society to you and not from the saver.

Sorry - symantics...lol

no rpb - the only reason I raised it was your example of A&L - they are a Bank not a B/Soc.

The key is the cheque is raised on the Bank's account not the individual's.

Not true im afraid..

A lot of scams with bankers drafts recently... Although technically they cant be stopped.. people are calling the issuing branch saying they have lost the draft a few hours after they collect at which point it can be cancelled.

Safest way is to go to the bank with him as has been mentioned...

Thanks for input on this guys - its always been a pain getting a safe payment that suits both parties but Im ok with it.

Im off to have a long goodbye drive in it today and give it a wash sentimental old sod I am ;)

Did the buyer know about the car through this forum Dave? (and therefore it was legit)

I'm still amazed people will buy unseen, i wish i was that brave as i keep missing the really rare/bargain stuff

Chap just bought my CLK virtually unseen.....phoned me....did negotiation on phone and then turned up 1 hour later with cash.....deal was subject to inspection / verifying that the car was in the condition described (it was!)

No he saw it on ebay and took my word on the interior and mechanics which are 100%, he is of the same mind as myself in that a bit of paint doesnt scare me if its honest paint. I sent him pics of the stone chip and roof miss scratch and knocked the price of the paint off the deal
