1999 C200 elegance
Hi, I'm new to this forum, so please forgive me if I get it wrong! Lol
I have a problem with my pride & joy & would really appreciate any help or advice.
I have a 1999 C200 elegance with a triptonic auto box.(petrol)
The other day the car wouldn't go into any gear, only park.
After a bit of delving under the bonnet I noticed a puddle of transmission fluid on the plastic scoop under the radiator.
I gathered there was obviously a leek within the transmission system.
I discovered the fluid was coming from the right hand side pipe that was under the rad, I repaired the pipe & refilled the transmission fluid,
The problem is now the car seems to be loosing fluid from the right hand side of the gearbox & smoking a lot, I gather this is due to fluid leaking onto the exhaust,
But my main concern is the car will only go into park, reverse & what seems like 1st gear, I presume this is limp mode? I have disconnected the battery for a few hours (trying to do some sort of reset) but its still the same...
Is there anyone who can PLEASE give me some advice on what to do?
I have just moved house & I'm skint! So I can't afford to take it to a MB dealer.... Many thanks James

If the ATF is below the required level, you will have problems with the gears.

What area do you live, so a member can suggest an indy (Mercedes specialist) who can help you.

Thanks for the reply.
If anything there might be to much ATF.
I got a stick from MB and the level seems to be a little over the second mark when hot?
I live in Scarborough (north Yorkshire) if anyone's local?

I'm not familiar with C class dipstick markings, but my E class dipstick showed approx 65mm up the stick with hot oil to be the correct level. That was an ebay dipstick with no markings. No help to you though I'm afraid.

If your gearbox has been overfilled, that too can result in gear selection problems. Probably the reason it is still leaking.

I can't offer a name for anyone local to you, but hopefully someone will spot your post and comment.

Good luck.

Thanks a million for your time in replying anyway.
Have a great weekend.
James

Hi,
If you are leaking oil from the RHS of the box, then it sounds like the pilot bush needs to be replaced, (its located where the cables exit the gearbox) they are about £18-20 from MB, they also can wick oil from the gearbox to the gearbox ECU in the passenger footwell, this could be causing you issues as it can contaminate it with trans oil, though it rarely does permanent damage it is advisable to take it out and wash it with lighter fluid or similar, and wipe the wiring loom down as well, you will find a lot of oil soaking into the sound proofing on the passenger side floor carpet underneath.
Get the oil and filter changed in the gearbox, and the pilot bush changed at the same time.

Just one more thing you can only dip the gearbox to check the level with engine running if you don't have a dip stick you can buy one from mb
