I've just had my transmissions serviced (new fluid, filter, gasket etc) by a supposedly reputable independent. I managed to drive the car about 15 miles before there was a strong smell of hot / burning transmission fluid and quite a lot of smoke!

I got the car recovered to said independent who replaced the sump gasket as the previous one had split quit badly. This time I managed about 80 miles before exactly the same thing happened.

I've now replaced the seal myself and managed over 200 miles without a similar occurence...

Has anyone had a similar problem i.e. could it be a faulty batch of seals or mechanics error? Also is there any likely damage to the transmission?

Cheers

John

I doubt that any damage would have been caused to the tranny....you say that you replaced the seal yourself, was the seal you removed damaged/split?

If you have fitted a new seal yourself and the problem has gone away. it says a lot for your mechanics that done the job previously. Score them off your list for any future repairs.

No hesitatation.

to be honest, i have done this once before, its a bit tricky and even slightly over tightening the bolts without sitting the seal right will result in this...

Yes correct, during Blacks open day the techies did a few of these, and I noticed the low torque used when putting the bolts back

I can sort of understand it happening once but twice within 3 hours (and it would have been less if I hadn't had to wait 1.5 hours for the recovery lorry) would suggest carelessness (and no the "specialist" didn't use a torque wrench).

My concern has increased somewhat as I now seem unable to select 2nd. I know there is a lockout but I'd assumed that whilst stationary I should be able to select it. Any ideas before I start expressing my dissatisfaction to the mechanic in question?

Needless to say it is highly unlikely I will ever grace his premises again! As such recommendations of a good indy in London would be gratefully received (and yes I did look through the other posts which is how he was selected in the first place!).

Cheers

John
