Does anyone know just how the hell I can get the main battery out from the engine bay???? There doesn't seem to be enough room to get at the terminals and I can't see a hold down clamp.

From the pics. there appears to be a metal bar down the back of the battery from the neg terminal and i cant see a clamp bolt. the plastic surrounding the battery seems to be in two halves but i cant see how it comes apart.
New battery is 20+Kg so hard to manouvere into/out of the area (if i can figure out how the old one comes out!) Might have to be a job for the local garage if i can jump start the car to be able to drive it there...

Can’t really tell from looking at my phone but I wonder if the airbox might come out to allow better access?

Different Layout, but may give the jist of it:

It’s a different but simpler setup on the W246.
From memory - Unclip the bonnet release cable from the battery cover. Undo the clip that holds the wiring loom to the battery cover and slide the cover forward to remove it. Undo the terminals and the securing clamp which is down the side of the battery. Lift the battery and pull it out towards the front of the car, best done with an assistant as it’s heavy. Reverse the process with the new battery. It’s possible to dismantle the battery box for easier access, held in by a few clips.

I will have another go tomorrow but this morning after about 1/2 hour struggling I couldnt feel my fingertips so gave up
