Eighteen months ago on instructions from the Ministry of Domestic Affairs, I crawled out from under my S202 and bought myself a Volkswagen Up! TSI which has covered the last 17,000 miles without going wrong at all. it cruises happily at 90 plus in third and will exceed 125 MPH on 999cc. I have averaged 93MPG across the Low Countries and the audio system is fantastic.
I hate it. It has neither charisma nor personality. When I fill it up I am tempted to add a Calgon tablet but why would I want it to last longer? White goods. Motorised Largactil. I have had enough.
This morning I bought a 163,000 mile old S203 220CDI. Facelift with electric cream leather seats and folding mirrors. Last service at the main dealer and one honest dent in a wing that will come out. The price asked was, due to a misunderstanding, half of what it should have been and it is both tidy and Azurite Blue. There is one electrical bug that "sometimes" requires me to close a pair of relay contacts in the relay box in order to allow it to start. I may just wire a push button across it until I find out a little more.
It has Comand 2.0 fitted, I think and it has a small antenna on the tailgate window. What I would like to do is pair a phone to it and plug an Ipod (or an SD card reader) into it. I am guessing it needs a Bluetooth Dongle and an Auxiliary lead. Has anybody experience of this, please? I realise that it isn't 2.5 and runs from a CD but it all seems to work and that is quite enough for a cheap banger. The good news is that it was so far below the budget I can afford to spend a little on tidying wheels and putting better tyres on it and next weekend I shall be back in a Mercedes-Benz. The order of the planets is restored.
