hi guys i need some technical help please, just purchased an e320 cdi estate and when i go over a bump or pothole there is a loud thud coming from the rear,it sounds like there is something loose in the boot, any ideas please.

'They all do that, Sir'.

Well, a lot of them do, including mine.
Jack retention clip and spare wheel 'thumb wheel' were missing, but that would be too simple.

The hydraulic struts seem to be the common culprits; top mount or bottom ball joint mounting. As do the forward sub frame mounts.

Then there's a plethora of arm bushes and the drop links to eliminate. Good luck in your quest.

Hi,
As you have a S211... estate... have you acually looked under the cover at the back. Depending on its specs you might have either extra seats or as in my case the "EasyPack" system where you get a plastic storage tray and also I had a collapsible plastic box. I was most excited about that !!
Anyways under here is the spare tyre and the battery. Have you checked to see if anything is rattling about or if the spare is secure even the battery is clamped down.
I slung an old towel on the top of my shelf just to quieten things.
As another thought have you got a broken rubber strap on one of the back boxes??
Anything else might start to get expensive ! Good Luck

I have an S211 E320CDI, to date I've changed all 4 top and bottom ball joints and suspension arms at the front. 5 garages have assessed or worked on the car, including an MB Dealer and 2 good Indies.
Ball joints were toast and this improved the front but I still get a few clunks from the front and rear, strange thing is it's worse first thing in the morning?

I've stopped spending money trying to find it.
