Bargain SL500?

A very early R129 with a non functioning roof could be a real money pit. Wonder why it needed a full respray?

Radio mast is stuck too ;)

The roof ECU is a common fault and controls various other things as well (windows, for instance). It's located beneath the rear seat and by the look of the pictures it has been wet. Possibly leaking roof or maybe even flood damage?

That garage is a few minuites from where I live,

Anyone interested I can look at it for them however.................

They do have a lot of nice 'looking stuff' at sensible prices but looking closer they are all a bit rough and ready. He has newer stuff up to around £25K Boxsters, Range Rovers, X5's etc a wide variety of cars... All need a good valet in my book.

Worse a collegue was interested in a Renault Scenic he had a few years ago, at the time quite a new one, low miles etc and it was cheap. He went and viewed it. Looks ok but garage owner was vague about how many owners, service etc. It also still had the auction details on the window.... (ok no probs him buying and selling but at least take them off for sale..)

Back home my friend did a HPI check and the car was listed on their as having a serious accident, cannot remember the full details.

All in All, Its one of them garages thats nice to to glance at stuff as you drive buy but I wouldn't spend my money there. His stuff is cheap but cheap for a reason me thinks :(

The power roof is not working but can be operated manually we have had a quick look at it but electrical diagnostics are not our mechanic's strengths ! So we will be selling it as it is NO RESERVE!

We have had it looked at and it is going to cost more than the car is worth to fix , so we want shot of it sharpish ...

Caveat emptor!!! (£££?)

Looks like it has stood for a while, and they have only just got the battery going, hence all indicator lights on?

Car sales places don't give away models like that so assume it will be a costly exercise.

Make a nice donor car for something could probably break it after taking the mechanical bits out and get almost all the money back if it stays that cheap.

I want to buy something like that one day and cut the top of the shell off and drop an older body on it for classic looks with modern comforts and power.

I think a new roof ECU will sort most problems (roof/windows/indicators/roll bar). Trouble is they are £1000+ new. They are like rocking horse poo used and there are several part numbers.
If it's something else as well then you're already a grand down.
IF you can find a used ECU and that's all it is then it's a very cheap car.

Agree with you on the roof front, but my 500 is a '91 with 113K on the clock, used until recently as a daily driver and has cost me very little over the last few years. Other than services about £500 I think, so they don't all have to be money pits.

Go past this garage quite often as some of my family live close, never seen a really clean car there. Still at under 3k it would make a greta tourer as long as its winter!

That's a great buy for someone - put the easy to install CIS 326bhp M119 engine/gearbox into a w126 or w124 and sell the rest of the car in parts.

Quids in !

I still stand on what I say, the cars look ok when driving buy......

Get up close and they need work.

Give that SL doesn't even look that good in the pictures and its had a repray with a none working hood I would think your just buying trouble.

Pleanty of loved ones for not much more. Especially as that Needs money spent on it.

Quick search found this and I'm sure there are better

But that one is a year older, has done 45k miles more (with no service history), and needed a full respray. So I would guess it's not been particularly well looked after.

As Talbir said, possibly worth it as a donor/parts car though.
