"Battery Alternator Visit Workshop" - Any ideas?

It isn't totally unknown for a battery to have an intermittent internal break too - I've seen one or two in the past. Measures fine, load tests fine, then a certain combination of temperature and vibration and it briefly goes open circuit. Can sometimes do it on demand by waggling a battery post too.

At 14 years old I'd change it on spec. too, then see how it goes. Cheaper and less work than a new alternator.

Ive just had to replace a 3 yr old battery in a customers volvo last week which was fried and it was the battery that fried the alternator. Not the other way about. Wasnt the nicest job changing that alternator.

Had the garage load test the battery and it passed. Just going to replace it but I'm very impressed that it still works after 14 years. Something to be said for modern batteries and the intelligent charging systems that are installed.

Any recommendations for a particular model?

You could buy Bosch but since the better Bosch batteries are made by VARTA what would be the point.;)
In selecting a new battery appart from the obvious dimensional/ terminal restrictions don't be too put off by slight differences in Ah ratings. The figure you want to look at is the cold cranking figure [ CCA]. A few years back to get an adequate cold cranking figure for a diesel you needed a large capacity battery to get that current. With improved battery tech smaller capacity batteries can often match the CCA figures of these big monsters of the past.

Thanks for that info. I did notice that many battery catalogues were recommending different sizes than the factory fit battery.

All the websites are recommending 096 batteries but the original spec was 019.

I'm no MB expert but there's mention of an "Extended Battery" option on the forum. So I'm guessing that's the reason for the huge battery in this car.

Would there be any issue with me installing one of Varta's recommended 096? would it rattle around?
