hi,
battery went flat over the cold snap, car been in garage for the last couple of months. The battery is only 15 months old.
i garaged the car and made it sorn so i can work on it as it went through a power loss phase, i changed the maf which seemed to do the trick, also changed all of the plugs (nightmare job).
charged the battery up but car will not fire up, read lots of the threads other people have left, so have checked fuses, located relays and have sourced a rectifer pack for the alternator.
which way do i go know? buy a rectifer pack first or change the fuel relay.
the car is a clk320 avantgarde year 2000, with high mileage 158000, the alternator would appear to be the original, not sure on their life span.
before the car had this problem there was a ticking/clicking coming from the front of the car when idling, with the noise increasing with engine speed could this be linked to me working on the plugs in some way?
any helpful info would be appriciated, before i run out of patients and stick it on ebay!!
Thanks

Rob

I wouldnt think it is the alternator/battery that is causing the problem if the car turns over but does not fire.

The two main things you need to check is that you first have a spark and fuel. Then i would advise getting it put on a star machine and have the fault codes read

Where are you located you might have a good independant in your area that might come and look at it

ok, thanks for that. i am in dalkeith just outside edinburgh.
i'll check to see if there is a spark, and put some more petrol in tomorrow and see if that helps, the fuel gauge is reading 13 miles left but i suppose just running it stationery could give a false reading.
thanks again

Rob

put petrol in it, and the engine now firing up, talk about basics, what a muppet i am, not going to give up my day job yet!
there is still a clicking/ticking noise on idle as mentioned, any ideas on that one?
thanks for pointing out the obvious
Rob

Hi rob glad its running now and only cost you the price of some fuel.

As per the ticking noise its hard to actually say what it is without hearing it myself. Where does the noise sound like its coming from

the clicking noise is comming from the right hand side near to the front of the engine block as you stand and look at it, almost between the engine and the water bottle for the windscreen wash. i could try recording it and e-mailing a link, i'll try that when i get back from work tonight. regards
Rob

As blackc55 says it could be the re-geration valve that is ticking and this is totally normal
