My car battery (a Yuasa 9000 series AGM) is beginning to show it's age....it never charges to over about 12.3 volts....drops to sub 12v (usually about 11.7) over night....its got the tell-tale slight bulging to the ends of the case......seat heaters wont stay on and even my smart charger refuses to give it a clean bill of health!! It starts fine even after a week of sitting.....but its only a matter of time until it doesn't.
Now the question is does it really need an AGM stop start battery......there is one in there now and most of the online battery places suggest one....but why? It's does not have the stop start function on my car....(2010 W212 E350 CDI by the way) and as long as it's the right capacity...80ah according to the Web.... which seems a bit small for the mighty V6 to me!....and physically the right size which is 115 spec than surely it will do. If I need one than I'll get one....its not that I'm tight (well maybe a bit!) it's that I'm probably going to move her on after the MOT in September....so I don't want to spend more than I need. All info and suggestions greatly appreciated. :)👍

I would be fitting a decent non AGM from someone like Tayna 👍

Was trying to look via Tanya ....but the battery part of their site is down...

Hmm.....their general battery catalogue is there...but it won't work if I put my reg in to get recommended batteries...odd.

The charging profile for AGM and traditional lead acid is slightly different. If I remember right then there is a setting in STARto switch battery type so that the battery is charged correctly.

Where is the battery located? As long as it's not in the cabin, a regular lead acid is fine. You might have to go into the ECU with a scan tool and let the car know that you're using a non AGM battery as they have different charging characteristics.

Contrary to what you might thing, there's only a small handful of companies that actually make batteries (about 4-5 for the whole of the US) so the brand really comes down to the warranty offered and the availability of dealers. I buy blems (blemished) from one of the largest dealers in the US. These are perfectly functioning batteries with either physical damage to the casing or batteries that were returned shortly after purchase. I get them for about $50 and they come with a 3 month warranty. Unless I put them in a vehicle that sits all the time, I can usually get 5 years out of them.

Varies quite a hit....but £50 to £60 more is fairly typical.

Having done a bit more research it looks lie they were specced with AGM from new....stop/start or not.....so that's what I'll go for....just need to find a good deal on a 115 size 80AH plus AGM now!!

Just in case others search this...the factory part number is A 000 982 21 08.

I had to replace the battery in my 2018 Eclass w213, and I replaced it with like for like, AGM battery as recommended, €300, and the dealership fitted it for me. They plugged a electrical gadget into the OBD socket while they were fitting it. it had been showing the "stop the vehicle in safe place and leave the engine running" dash warning.

@ALFAitalia is there a specific reason to get rid of the e class or do you just fancy a change?

Not really....I like the car, and especially that engine, a lot.....but I don't keep many cars more than a year or so. I might even get another 212....possibly with the E350 petrol this time....but finding them with a light interior is not easy. I like the CLS too....but another 6 or 7 insurance groups up for the basically the same car just with a more snoopy, and slightly less practical, body seems an unnecessary expense to me.

Well the new battery is doing well....after almost a week of not using the car I walked past it the other day...so the car pinged its voltage to my phone......12.59V....so virtually 100% fully charged....the old one would tumble down to about 11.6 or 11.7 over night and be around 11 after a week....always started fine though. Has not cured my EGR fault code issue though!!! (was not really expecting it too TBH) new one ordered.
