..But a Really Bad Idea?

It's coming to the time of year when my feet begin to itch for a more interesting vehicle. This looks lovely, but is it financial suicide for me to consider it as a daily driver?

All the good omens are there for a well-cared for car I think...

What's the rust like on these- And any other niggling faults I should know about?

Me likey likey.

IIRC the 300-24 is a well regarded engine, so thats probably a good start.

Didn't the early R129 suffer with wiring loom problems?

The other thing to consider is that an SL500 could be had for that sort of money, if you really wanted to go all out!!

I'm sure the more knowledgable contingent will be along shortly... ;) :D

Never any rust, wiring issues, head gasket, electrics and roof, but a lot of these 129s never give any problems

Looks really very nice.

Provided you give it a good looking over before buying it, why not.

I've no experience of that car though so can't help beyond that.

A 1993 would have been two-tone from the factory, so a close eye for accident damage would be a good idea too.

Might just be an aesthetic upgrade, but still best check the quality of the work.

Mmm, getting better. To be honest the MPG is not a massive issue since my mileage is fairly low. What sort of real-world figures would one be looking at for these?

I'm just tempted because it's up for roughly the same money I could sell my Accord for and, well, it's just so much more... interesting...

A nice looking car - did these really not have air con as standard? Wow!

Anyway, I like it. What's the club badge that appears on the front skirt and then moves to the bonnet?

With the first samples of the 129 almost everything was extra to start with, including heated seats and air con, electric seats, by the time it got to the last of the line in 09 1998 everything was standard

I want one..... always loved those and one day when the purse grows i may just get one..... get it and justify it later....... thats what i would do.... good luck

For really short journeys you could no doubt use a push bike, my main concern would be parking. where would you keep it?

If the answer is favourable then what a posing machine! Mega grin factor although I am no fan of that colour.

Bobby Dazzler raised a very good point about paintwork. Be aware and be warned. They don't usually have rust problems so satisfy yourself regarding reasons.

Good luck with the decision you jammy devil.... Me envious?? Me??? :D :D

regards
John

True about storage! Where does the hard-top go when not on the vehicle?
At the 3 houses I've lived in it's been kept in the shed, in a spare bedroom, and (now) in the garage. Stored vertically (on a stand) it doesn't take up that much room. I've got a padded storage bag for it too, to protect from dust/dirt/knocks.

This is a very nice car ....looks like full MBSH .

The expensive job on this has been done - new hood.

Plus that engine is very good, and far cheper to mantain than the 500.

I would have definately gone for this is I was in the market for one.

Doesn't look a bad car, but this picture really puts me off:

I know there's nothing that untoward there (a bit of wear - 90K miles, fair enough), but it's the tangled up seatbelt and unloved look - especially for a classified ad photo!

I think that forum member Basmar's car was a very good buy recently - that was a 320 and looked in superb condition, silver, slightly lower mileage, that was up for £6.5K in the end, don't know what it sold for.

Even so, £6995 is very little money for such a car, can't lose much on that now :)
