hello .I have a MB cls 2016 2.1 td does this model have a timing belt or chian and if its a belt at what milage should it be replaced. Thanks
 
What does it aim at?

It aims to not last the life of the engine and be difficult and expensive to change.

On the belt vs chain debate, if they can't engineer a chain to last the life of the engine then give me a belt any day provided it's easy and therefore cheap to change.
 
Modern ones are a pain, particularly transverse layouts. The good old Ford Pinto engine was easy.
 
Depends on the layout.....my four pot ALFA and the V6 one before that were both an easy DIY on the drive to do the cambelt and water pumps.....both transverse lumps. Often they are easier as you dont have to remove radiators and cooling fans to get the space to do the job.
 
Engines with timing belts are cheaper to make, and the belt is supposed to provide for smoother and quieter operation with less vibration and noise.

Regarding maintenance, it is easier to check the condition of a belt than that of a chain, so it really depends if the car is well-maintained.... if it is, then a belt will pose no issues, but if the car is neglected then the chain is the safer bet.
 
Not only is it a problem with a belt if regular maintenance is not carried out but also with a chain if regular oil changes are not carried out then it can have a massive effect of chain life and guides tensioners etc and also a lot more expensive to replace

True, BUT... a chain will typically give warning noises plenty of time before it actually fails - the car owner will need to make a conscious effort to ignore it. A belt will almost always snap without warning (wrecking the engine in the process).
