I saw a late registered Volvo today with numberplate's of bright Silver letters and numbers on a black background. I have to say, I think it improved the look, I felt it was a subtle touch  I've always thought that the yellow and white numberplate's make most cars look a little tacky. You spend £40,000 on a new Mercedes spend ages choosing the paint and trim to look right, only then to have a bit of bright yellow plastic stuck to the back of it.

My Question is; Are these black and silver numberplate's legal? :)

strictly speaking no it is meant to be for cars pre 1973, but i have seen it on younger cars the comment i have been told it was on the car when i got them seems to turn a blind eye if u get stopped or if it is on a private plate 1973 or older it came when we bought the no plate hope it helps

Thanks guys. :(

I do have a set though. Taken from the car, my registrations number was taken from though.

if they float your boat then just get them - who cares - there are no traffic police left on the roads anyway and town bobbies wouldn't know or give a monkeys as they have other things to think about.

The offence would be driving without a number plate as the police won't recognise the plate as a No. plate (if you see what I mean) - same as putting a small number plate on a motorcycle. (which I have been doing for years and never been pulled)
It (currently) doesn't incur any penalty points on your licence.

Thats all very well until it's MOT time, they will fail it, full stop!

Well, if that's the only time it is likely to be a problem, just put regular plates on for the MOT and then switch them back again afterwards?

I know I shouldn't,but I have black and silver plates on my SL, it also has a personalised reg, three numbers and three letters.

So with old stlye car, plates and number, Ive never had a problem.

I have a private plate to, 3 letters and 4 numbers. Not my choice, was on the car which is a 2001

Just as I have for the Motorbike - the 'legal' plate even has the reflector on it which is also needed for an MOT pass on the bike.

and then for the other 364 days it has no reflector and a small plate!

It's not the only time it will be a problem. The police don't need an excuse to pull you over these days, why give them extra ammuntion?

I've put black and silver on my SL too - orange just clashes with the signal red paint!

When my new personal plate arrives, it will make the car look older than it is and the plates will then appear "less" illegal, not that they've attracted any unwanted attention yet.

I had them on a Rover 14 years ago. I was stopped by traffic Police and soon shown the error of my ways.

I was given a ticket that gave me 14 days to rectify the fault and have it stamped at an MOT garage (I think!).

And, that was the officer being nice to me! HD

My freind had a black and silver front numberplate on his car, which is 2000 (x) and he got stopped by the police, and was issued a fixed penalty for £ 60 i think it was.

Which i thought was a bit unfair, no warning or if i see you again, you'll get a fine.

No, bang straigh away, £ 60 fine!

how he has said numberplate on the dashboard for some reason and a normal white one on the front!

Black and Silver plates still used/legal in the Channel Islands. My Guernsey registered bike has a tiny 3 digit black and silver plate, police couldn't care less.
