I have a Ring Pro which seems to have become juiceless. Long shot, but does anyone know if a new battery can be fitted, I know some packs allow for this, but can find nothing relating to Ring kit.

Also, anybody got any idea what the minimum specs of a booster needs to be to start a 6 litre engine? Some of the packs claiming 800 CCA have scary prices.

When my Ring was working I never had occasion to use it on the SL so I have no idea if it would suffice. If

As ever, thanks.

I would have thought that a booster's CCA should have the same (or greater) rating as that of the original fitment battery?

At any rate, I doubt there's a generic figure for 6-Cyl engines, because the required CCA will depend on a number of other factors, most importantly the engine's compression ratio, which tends to be in this order:

Highest - Diesel engines

High - normally-aspirated high-performance petrol engines

Normal - normally-aspirated non-performance petrol engines

Low - supercharged or turbocharged high-performance petrol engines

etc....

It's a V8. Original battery is 830CCA which is why I've been looking for specs on booster. Not all give them.

Have you measured the voltage across the terminals of your booster? I ask as you seem to be getting a similar response from jump leading your SL.

My cheapo booster from machine mart is now 7 years old and still going strong. It will start my SL too from an almost flat battery.

I charge it annually...which reminds me ...its about time I give it a charge.

I saw a battery device recently for charging phones and such. Not much bigger than an iphone but was powerful enough to start a car. Came with crocodile clips for starting a car and was rated to 300 amps apparently. Impressive I thought.

I don't have a meter, but the "health meter" lights on the charger reads O and that was after 24 hours charging.

I don't know if the fact it's 6 litre makes any difference.

What still worries me is that it wouldn't start whilst hooked up to the GS

While youre on amazon, add a multimeter to your tool collection. Youll find it a useful addition.

No homestart then?

If your battery is completely dead and your jump leads not really heavy duty ones then it wouldnt surprise me that you couldnt start a 6 L engine this way.

Yes I think you may well be right here. I noticed that the leads were very seriously hot. I need to get some thicker leads.

Don't you think a heavy duty booster should get me going, duff battery or no?

It would likely start your car but im concerned your car might die once you disconnect the booster.

If that did happen, I could leave it connected for twenty minutes to get me to Halfords; no?

Unscrew the plastic housing of the booster to reveal the battery inside. You can normally buy a new replacement from CPC.

I have replaced the battery in a snap on booster pack for less than half of what the dealer wanted to fit a new battery.

Yes I've seen a few that you can do that with, but I'm not sure abut the Ring Pro. :dk:

These jump packs really dont last unless they are used and charged regularly... Having them as a back up seems a great idea but they wont work when you really need them.

Only the ones over £200 are any good.. We have several Snap On ones.

For home use nothing better than a battery conditioner.

Mine came good in the end, but it's just not powerful enough for a 6 litre V8. In fact when I checked the specs I found out it's for up to 3.5 litre. So it did well to get it started.

I paid about £150 for mine

Except when the battery goes phut..:D

My 70 quid one is still going strong 7 years on.

This year it lived in the boot of my sisters car for 3 months while she was dithering over getting a replacement battery. It must have got her started at least ten times without recharge.

It starts my SL (but turns it over slower than I would like).

I take it camping and it lives in the boot on long journeys just in case.

Money well spent I think.

I tend to charge it using my maintenance charger rather than the one it came with which might explain its longevity.
