My student son and a few of his friends want to go on a road trip raising money for charity through Student Adventures called Bratislava or Bust.

Basic premise is buy a car for up to £500 drive it from the UK to Bratislava, and either sell it and fly home, or drive it back and sell it.

They get sponsorship, which goes to charity.

Why have i posted this here?

Well apart from fatherly concern of 4 20 yr olds driving across europe safely!!

Does anybody have any good suggestions on appropriate vehicle? Needs to be big as they will probably sleep in it, and needs to be reasonably economical, and reliable. (its a big ask I know)

Secondly, any good ideas on cost effective insurance for a car for approx 1 month only with european cover, and breakdown?

Thanks in advance.

probably an old volvo estate or the likes, maybe tatty but sound 124? Insurance i going to be the biggest headache I think.
What about something like a scorpio 2.3?

As above, not a petrol one, fuel can be a bit on thepoor side. Unless things have changed. Wish them luck:thumb:

Estate is a great idea

when you say sleep in it, do you mean use it like a camper van

Not really, they are students, just needs enough space, they dont need creature comforts:D

thanks, some good options, the skoda especially.

If they really want to sell it there, perhaps getting a LHD is not a bad idea; could also be a tad cheaper than regular car, unless you go for 1950s SL or something :bannana:

Not sure about insurance but green flag do cheap short term breakdown cover, thats what I used on my recent trip to the Nurburgring ring.

My friends did this when I was back at Uni. They bought a Nissan Sunny, got them there and back. So I would say try and stick to a Japanese car, is cheap and reliable.

Pug 406 estate preferable with the old XUD engine as it should run on any old fuel inc cooking oil.

Go to Ebay. Browse Classifieds. Maximum Price £500. Sort into Ending Soonest

Enjoy browsing...

i would say an old volvo estate as-well, a diesel. as safe as you get and they could sleep in it if they get stranded.

Old Volvo 740 estate has to be a good bet. Big and strong, slow and probably ok on fuel but enough room to sleep and be at least a bit comfy.

I looked on piston heads and some T5's were only a few quid !!!
