C180 Avantgarde Estate Automatic
I am considering buying an automatic C CLASS Estate, the model produced between 2000-2007. I have read that there are rust problems with this model in it's first few years of production. At what point was this problem solved, was the model upgraded, if so when?

The galvanising began in late 2003 but the post facelift are much better in so many ways - electrics, interior etc. The rust issues were mostly around the wheelarches

Many, many thanks, that's great!!!!!!!!!!

Always check round about the wheel arches and the bottom of the doors in the pre 2004 models for signs of rust that has been painted over when buying.

I believe the estates were made in a different location/country to the salons and for some reason or other don't suffer the same rust problems. I have just sold my c270cdi s203 (2003) 200,000 miles to a friend, running like a train and no rust anywhere!

True, the early saloons were made in South Africa, the estates in Germany. But I believe they rust just as quickly.

My 2002 estate is rusting like an old Lancia, particularly the tailgate, doors, wheel arches and bonnet.

The roof and the bumpers are about the only bits of the body that aren't rusty, but mechanically it has been brilliant. I got it new and it has now done 334K miles.

Facelift started in late 2004. Basically you're looking for the clear headlights and the "crystal" look rear lights.
Most of the rust is around the front and rear wheel arches and bottoms of doors.

My car is a 'facelift' 2006 saloon built in MB's South Africa plant, and it has no rust.

In fact it proved very reliable, with only a couple of minor faults so far.

What engine were you considering - petrol or diesel? 4, 5 or 6-cylinder (I am assuming you are not looking for the formidable C55 AMG...)?

Petrols are cheaper and there are plenty of them, lots of C180 Kompressor and C200 Kompressor around with low mileage. Low mileage cars are recommended because the M271 engine (4-Cylinder petrol) is prone to timing chain issues at 80-100k miles.

Diesels are more sought after, especialy the 220 CDI which offers good economy with reasonable performance. Most will be high milers, but in the case of the diesel engines it is not much of an issue - though service history is paramount.

Also note that there are different trim levels, some models are 'sporty' with lowered and stiffer suspension, wider low-profile tyres, and brushed aluminum or carbon effect interior, while others are geared more towards comfort and softer ride and have wood-covered central console.
