Hi I have a 2017 c class petrol 4 matic. It's due an a service which as far as I can see is an oil change. It's on 25000 miles and I'm sure I see somewhere it's due spark plugs. Does anyone know if that's correct ?. The car will be serviced locally not mb. Also according to mb the transmission service changed on 2017 my to 75000 miles rather than 5 years which seems odd to me. Thanks in advance.

It's definitely five years on autobox not mileage

This has cropped up before, and fairly recently. From memory, it would seem that at some stage in the not-to-distant past they changed it yet again, this time to mileage only for cars after a specific vin etc., however, I don't have a link to the definitive answer.

I recall commenting at the time that a cynic might think that they'd changed it because so many people were taking out service plans just to cover the 'big' services' at years 4 and 5, and atf change is one of the more expensive components, which in many cases would now no longer be needed to be changed. I, of course, am of the view that it would only have been changed for sound engineering reasons 🙂.

If it was mine, I'd have it changed irrespective of what MB recommend/say.

Thanks for the replies. Had a look at the service sheet link. No mention of spark plugs but still a bit confusing on the gearbox. The main dealer told me it's 75000 miles (it's the 9g) think I will go for a fluid change anyway. Does anyone know what mileage other service items ie plugs fuel filters need doing ? A and b service just seems oil change and brake fluid every other.

I can definitely say the 9g ATF change is at 77500m, have that confirmation in an email from MB UK.

There is a possibility that some schedules have changed slightly in the past year or so, however, for many years the standard servicing has been based on mileage/years, annually or every 15,500 miles, whichever comes first:
Annual oil/filter
Every 2 years (or 31,000 miles) - pollen filter, brake fluid
Every 3-years (or 46,500 miles) - clean lubricate panoramic roof
Every 4-years (or 62,000 miles)- air filter, fuel filter (diesel), spark plugs (petrol)
Every 5-years (or 77,500 miles) - gearbox fluid change (but has varied over the years with varying boxes)

Coolant was, and may still be, every 15 years. Some petrol cars with in-tank fuel filters were/are every 15-years

In addition, usual checks on brakes/suspension/ tyres etc

I think that covers most things. Sometimes cars seem to be set up on the onboard service system as c16,000miles 'to next service', rather than 15,500 miles (ie 25,000km, which is obviously what MB specified originally).

I have heard, but not seen, that some might recently have changed, ie perhaps plugs every 3- years but that was a non-Uk market and may not be applicable in UK.

Personally, I change filters more often than specified, some air-filters look really grubby after c20,000 miles, let alone 70,000.

According to the hyperlink then for my E220d servicing looks like:

In simple terms: every 12 months or 25k km (15k miles) whichever comes first then in rotation the car gets (in order) A, B, A, B etc
  • Service A checks
  • Service B checks
Additionally then add (which ever is first unless specified):
  • Service 3: 25k km (15k miles)/1yr - Change Engine Oil and Filter
  • Service 4: Every 2 yrs - Replace Brake Fluid
  • Service 8: 75k km (45k miles)/3yrs - Replace Air Filter
  • Service 10: 50k km (30k miles)/3yrs - Grease pan roof, grease towbar
  • Service 11: 75k km (45k miles)/3yrs - Replace Diesel Fuel filter
  • Service 20: 125k km (75k miles) - Change Gearbox (9G) oil and filter (not age as the fluid deteriorates with use)
  • 25k km (15k miles)/2yrs - Replace under bonnet cabin filter (dust)
  • Every B service: Replace interior active charcoal filter
If you are feeling generous, then you might let them top up the screen wash/adblue etc, or save a fortune and do it yourself

Got to say that the German Dealer schedule says air filter annually at each A or B; personally I would never let the air filter get to 3 years old/45k miles!

Hope this helps?

It's the air filter intervals that get me . I can't see how an air filter fitted to a car in (for example) in Norway can have the same service interval on the same car driving around the desert states of the UAE or Arizona for example.

The same could be said of a gearbox that is driven gently and one that tows a caravan/horsebox every weekend.

Just put in the details for my car and it is uterly wrong. For example, telling me I need a new fuel filter when it was only replaced at the 3year point last September....
Tell the man who serviced it to add the info onto ess . :-)

Hi. Thanks for the info. Have added spark plugs to tomorrows service. I have the car serviced locally so the DSB isn't updated. I'm also going in the main dealer tomorrow to have a look at another car and will get a price for gearbox service as the car is approaching five years old even though it seems mileage dependent rather than age I think I would be more comfortable getting it done.

When my e350 was nearing 5 years old I had a message pop up on the dash for I think B7 service ,which is the gearbox . At the time mileage was less than 20,000.

The only time I had this done on my last R171 SLK I used an MB specialist (as they were about 50% cheaper than my nearest UK dealer). I had a quote last week from my dealer here in Germany for €540 with oil parts and labour which actually is very competitive. Then parts were only 5% more than getting them online (surprisingly) and as the job itself only takes about 1hr the labour (for an MB garage) was reasonable at about €125.

Dealer will charge around £420.

Indie £370.
