Evening guys,

I've a got a 55amp alternator in the car looks original, it's a bosch. I've noticed some odd things closing the electric Windows causes the cars idle to bounce up and down, the ing the steering wheel while stationary had the same effect. I know the steering wheel thing can be normal but the window switches? Oddly using electric sunroof doesn't have this effect!! I can also open and close the Windows by holding the key left or right in the boot lock lol??

Is this a sign of a weak alternator? Bad battery? Can I get an uprated alternator like a 70amp one to solve the issue?

I suspect the boot lock thing is related to alarm system wiring.

Nb car is non a.c. bog standard only electrics are basic CD player and Windows/sunroof

Opening and closing the windows from the locks is just the full close feature.

Could be a weak alternator, just needs the output checking.

Well looks like I'll need to get a multimeter, electrics aren't my strong point! Thanks carat

Do I have to keep all the eletrics off? CD player lights etc or do I test it with everything on?

Stupid question (i really don't do electrics) but I test at the battery terminals using the multimeter right?

Go into any garage or even car spares shop and they will test the battery/alternator in seconds with a load tester

Thank you guys, ordered a multimeter. Will have a go my self first and also check brushes on the alternator while I'm at it

Well used the meter today to check the battery.

Car off battery reads 12.4v
Car on no load 13.8v
Car on lights and radio on 13.4v

I'm assuming that's close enough to 14v to not be bothered about it anymore?

I'm afraid not.

The resting (fully charged) voltage should be 12.6 - 12.7 volts. Running with no load the voltage should be a minimum of 14.4V

Get your alternator checked. An auto-electrics place will check and, if necessary, repair your alternator for very little money.

Thank you much appreciated.

I'll pull the voltage regulator over next weekend if all okay then will find an auto electrics place to get sorted.

Hey guys am back.

Anyone know where I can source the following bosch voltage regulator 1 197 311 009

I can't seem to find it anywhere

I noticed now the head unit display tends to flicker and dim albiet slightly when car is stationary.

By way of side note I wonder if this could be partially contributing to my rough idle for the last 6 months!
