A C180 M274.910 with 90k miles is making a worrisome sound on cold start, which - I believe - could be an indicator of the dreaded timing chain problem. According to the dealer, everything is fine (as expected). I wonder if any of you with an ear for this could make out anything from the following video:

Thanks a lot!

Could be, firstly I'd check head shields to see if they are lose which are causing clatter.
Next bet is probably timing chain.

When did you start noticing this?

Thanks for the reply. I noticed it the first time I started the engine at the dealership. ;) I haven't yet bought the car, I just heard about this potential problem during my prior research. Of course, it's hard to decide without experiencing how it should sound like.

Forgot to mention: the sound smooths completely out after a few minutes.

Normally and others might correct me, Timing chain noises occur from cold for around 4-5 seconds and then they go silent, but seeing as the car is at 90k it might have gotten worser so the noise is more apparent for a longer period. Hard to tell with this one.

Maybe you could get the dealer to replace chain & sprockets etc...tbh I would leave it alone

I have a 2013 C180 W204 with the M274 engine.

If is difficult to tell for certain from the YouTube clip, but it does not sound to me abnormal.

Perhaps if they have another W204/M274 in stock you could listen to it and compare.

Not surprised the dealer wouldn't want to change the chain...expensive for them.
Mind you, as Markjay says, this sounds fairly normal for a cold engine untill the oil circulates...my 180k sounds similsr and I know for certain the chain was replaced about 80k miles ago.
Maybe use it as a bargaining tool...?
