I had a call from the local police this evening saying that they have found my W203!!
Stolen in January, and found today in West Sussex with false plates.
A policewoman noticed two strange cars parked in someone's drive on her road and thought them to be a bit suspect and out of character with the residents. Plate checks did not tie up with the chassis numbers.
My car was on a 53 plate and the other car was a Mondeo Ghia X on an 06 plate.
As I was paid out by the insurance, the car belongs to them, but I am interested in what they will do.
Has anyone had any experiences such as this where a vehicle has been recovered after insurance payout. Do you get the opportunity to buy it back? Is it worth it? (they told me it is in good condition). I realise that the market value would be less as a stolen/recovered vehicle, ans selling-on later could be a problem.

[heading overseas later tonight for a week with minimal internet access, but comments appreciated]

I daresay that if you could, and did, buy it back. You'd forever be getting pulled by the boys in blue as the numberplate would probably throw up an alarm if they check it.

I must say that I'd not be all that sure if I'd want it back all things considered - especially that it's been gone for the majority of a year! Maybe more psychological than anything, but all the same...

No harm in enquiring and could be a bargain at the right price BUT I personally would not want it back after being stolen. The vehicle was damaged when being stolen as being reversed out of the garage as well!

At least contact the insurance company or the third party that will now own the vehicle as the insurer has paid out for it.

Worth to ask, the fatc it was used on false plates for so long without getting noticed probably means it was being driven im a "normal fashion". Just see how much they want for it, and go and see it before deciding.
From memory NickG's SL60 was sold online for near half of what he had paid for it.
