Hi. I'm new to mb club and have joined in the hope of some help.
I have just bought a c43 saloon which is in need of tlc, parts and tech knowledge.

I bought it local to me and it has been stood for around 3 years as it had a gearbox fault which made it stick in gear. Over time the gearbox was removed and that was about as much that was done.

The car has come to me missing it's wheels and complete exhaust.

The car is in ok ish condition and I am committed to get it back on the road just to hear the engine note haha.

I am hoping that someone out there has an exhaust and a gearbox or even a point in the rite direction where I can get sorted for reasonable costs.

Thanks in advance from sunny Newcastle upon Tyne

Hi and thanks for looking.

Yep I have seen it. I have emailed them twice over the past few days and they have not had the decency to reply at all!
I will try ringing them today but im not holding out much hope with them.

Any idea how much a complete stainless system would cost?

I priced a longlife system recently including back box - approx £5-600

That's not bad to be honest.
I rang douglas valley breakers and all that is left is the shell so no luck there ;-(

Hmmmm. I have attempted many times to do business with these people. Not once have they ever had the parts that they advertise. Having paid for and waited some time for an X5 rear bumper, several calls later they told me it "was run over " by their fork lift driver. That seems to happen a lot as they also told me the same about an engine cover that they advertised for weeks after.

I've known of them for a while and used to come across the salvage they sell. Most of it is same price as un damaged stuff so waste of time buying.

I am thinking about putting the gearbox back in and seeing how it goes. After reading lots of post on web I am thinking that it's the speed sensor in the box which may be causing problem.

Any body else have any common gearbox failure issues?

it is quite a common issue for conductor plate to fail - worth a try?

could expensive just throwing parts at it though

It could all be folklore, as in three years ago it went into limp mode and was stuck in 2nd or 3rd, type of thing.

Good to see someone else taking on a C43 in need of TLC! Good luck with it.:thumb:

I agree it could be expensive mistake chucking random parts at it and hoping for the best.
I may of found a entire donor car with a fooked engine. Should find out back end of next week if I get it. That would certainly solve all my problems!

If I don't get it I have found some one local that is willing to make up the exhaust for around 600 which I don't think is unreasonable.

A donor is the clear way to go here.

Otherwise, do you know the gearbox code? If you have the build spec. at the back of the service book, it will be stated there as:
7. Getriebe, 7226XX

I don't have any history at all. It came with nothing but I have emailed MB customer services the relevant proof of ownership and they are going to get as much info as they hold on the car and e-mail me it. very good of them!

I have the gearbox out and it has the following numbers on;
R 210 271 08 01 on the bell housing and R140 27126 01 on the main housing if them are of any good?

I have found the stamp on the box and its a 722.631
The donor car has fallen through :-( so I am going to have to sort the one I have.
Anybody got any original alloys for sale? not bothered about condition as they would be getting refurb any way.

Hi & welcome.
Would a g/box from another merc not fit ? I know the box in mine is in quite a few different cars, so maybe some other older v8's too? Good luck.

hi french.
I have done a bit of searching and it would appear that the 722.631 was only fitted to c43 and the odd v8 amg. they are rated for 580nm i think which makes them a bit rarer and hard to find.
Im hoping that i can get pointed in the rite direction for common failure problems as it was getting stuck in gear now and then. Im thinking maybe the speed sensor on the electro plate, a sticky solenoid or even just a oil and filter change.

See if you can while away the hours and find evidence of 'someone on the internet' successfully using a 722.626?

On paper, the OM613 application put out 60 Nm more than C43.
(But not graph paper... the diesel torque gradient will be lesser).

Would save some of the folding paper. I take Paypal too.

you can use the 722.636 tranny from e55 with minor tweaks to make it work on c43
