GLA 200d amg line auto
Hi all

long time reader, first time poster.

I've had an issue with my wifes 2017 GLA 200D amg line over the last few months, where there is a metallic/mechanical rattle on acceleration (light or hard) to the bottom right of engine (when in drivers seat)

MB have done all sorts of tests, recorded sounds and sent to MB HQ but cannot find a problem. I have read on here about butterfly flaps but they are dismissing this.

They are saying its a characteristic of the car and that all GLAs and/or engines make the same noise and are now refusing to do anything about it.

If its supposedly in all GLAs or 200D engines, has anyone else noticed this? Its getting to a point where its really frustrating

I can upload a video/sound file if required. Thanks in advance

Andy

Hi Andy, upload the file,I have no idea about your problem, but the guys on here like to have as much info as you can give them a chance of helping you.

thanks for the advice zipdip

sound file uploaded here Vocaroo | Voice message

gets progressively louder

MB have done some tweaking so its not as bad as it was, but its always there

i had a replacement glc 250d for a month and didnt note this sound

thanks for any advice

We have a GLA220D. I have tried to listen to your audio cant seem to pickup the rattle you mention. Ours has a different rattle, coming from the centre, below the air vents. From somewhere around the navigation/media buttons are located. MB have had the car in a number of times but haven't been able to fully fix it. Car bought new from MB and its just coming upto 2 years! I really dont know what to say!!! its a premium brand and shouldn't rattle :(
Mind you, my local dealer has been very supportive. They should be! after all the money I've spent there LOL

My previous 250cdi would make a "pinking" sound under hard acceleration which would go away if premium fuel was used. Could this be the same as your sound?

As a side point, how do you find the power of the GLA200d? My wife fancies one but I'm not sure how 134bhp would feel in that car...

i am sorry to read about your problems. it must be frustrating as hell since they are not acknowledging this. i personally would go higher and speak to the managers, dealer principal etc.

however these small cars (A and GLA etc), from experience, aren't built very well yet they are so expensive for what they are. Sit in a C or E class, the quality is night and day.

I agree. I'm not that keen on the GLA personally as I find the interior really lacks quality for the price.

Compared to my SLC for example (or my Lexus come to that) it feels cheap (in my opinion), and certainly no better than my cheaper to buy Kuga!

But it does look quite nice on the outside :)

This autocar review is fairly scathing about the GLA's refinement?
Mercedes GLA AMG Line 2017 facelift review
quote:-
The engine and gearbox don’t feel particularly well integrated, either, so you get plenty of revs when you’re pulling away from junctions and traffic lights – and that exposes the age-old weakness of Mercedes’ 2.1-litre powerplant: refinement.
The sound of the motor is drowned out by wind and road noise at motorway speeds, but anything other than gentle acceleration anywhere else brings with it a coarse, loud rattle. And this doesn’t really improve once the engine has warmed up, either.

Think the car will have a transverse version of the OM651 engine found in many MB models untill recently and may transmit more noise to the cabin in this configuration??

I have a new A200d and don't have any sort of rattle, I also couldn't really hear it in your audio clip either.
Are you sure it's actually from the engine and not the interior somewhere? A lot of people complain about rattles from within the cabin which never seem to get identified.

In terms of refinement, it's not the best but that's more down to the engine - my dad has a C220d SE and it sounds pretty similar under acceleration. I had an A180 CDI a few years ago and that was worse. The quality isn't the greatest, I came from a BMW M140i and everything inside that felt much more solid, nicer to touch and just generally better quality, its a £30k+ car but the interior is the same as that in the most basic 1 Series.

I think they'll address this in the new A Class which hopefully will be more in-line with other models, just like BMW and Audi do with their cars and im guessing the same will apply to the G/CLAs too.
