I’ve been told conflicting info about the gearbox on my E320 CDI 3.0 7 speed.

First I was told the gearbox is sealed and can’t be serviced.

Secondly I was told that’s rubbish and oil / filter in the box can be changed.

What’s the truth please ? and if it can be done can anyone recommend a mechanic around Southend-on-sea area that can do it please ?

When you say serviced ?

Had my ATF and filter changed on my 722.9 auto transmission.

I have never used them but have heard good things about Newood Transmissions Ltd in southend.

On W209 I think the gearbox should serviced at around 37/40K miles. Get done by MB or indie who have all the necessary equipment.

All gearboxes can be serviced.

On some models MB specified that the automatic transmission is 'sealed for life' and does not need to be serviced.

But even so the recommendation from MB specialists is that it should be serviced anyway, just like any other MB transmission.

Early 5g boxes need ATF and filter change every 4 years or 37.5/40k miles (some are defined as need doing only 'once at', but again the recommendation is 'every').

Later 7g+ boxes need ATF and filter change every 5 years or 70/75k miles.

As others have said, yes, according to the specialists. It's been 37k since mine was last done so it's booked in with Star Motors in a couple of weeks to have the fluid and filter changed. There are no issues with it at the moment, but I'd like to keep it that way!

The 7g box can be serviced, however it does need to done by a Merc specialist who has the right kit to do the job.

Any reason to think an outfit like this wouldn't have the necessary nous to not make a merc 7g gearbox explode:-

Automatic Gearbox Specialist - Leeds Transmission Services

Is there some special bit of kit needed that only a merc dealer or specialist uses?
I only ask as they have quoted me £170 to do a fluid and filter change on my 2011 e350.

The 7g needs to have the wear adaptations done, fluid temperature checked etc. This is done using Mercedes Star diagnostic equipment, there may well be other kit that can do this? Ring your local Merc indi and ask them for a price, £170 seem s more like the price for the 5g box. The 7g fluid is quite expensive and has to be pumped in I think.

Interesting, thanks.

The only merc specialist in Leeds doesn't have the best rep sadly. Not sure what their pricing is like either but looking at there huge glass fronted showroom and massive workshops it's probably not far of main dealer. I can but ask though.

My CLS 350cdi will be 5 years old in half year and will require ATF service. Price from main dealer £450, price from merc indie with good reputation £300, so I just signed up for 2 years service plan, £38/m, best option really if you need to have ATF service done.

The only caveat is that if your car is one of those models that were specified as having a 'sealed for life' gearbox, then the MB Service Care Plan won't cover the ATF change - best check on ESS before committing to the Service Plan.

it is 2013 model, it is serviced in normal intervals - 5years or 75miles. checked with main dealer whilest signing up for it

absolutely fine, i took it more personally as was quoted to my post, but you are right, check before signing up is a must, and if answer is yes - it is really worthy consider service plan with all its benefits

I'd go elsewhere. I've no experience of any outfit in Leeds but in general terms, you don't want some punks rsing up your gearbox!

The 7g and 5g I believe are similar in price to service. The 7g+ is more because it uses a lot more expensive filter and fluid I understand - but then the intervals are longer as posted. The actual distances are in KMs but converted to Miles which is you get the weird mileage figures.

The service plan ain't a bad idea. If you ring Merc with your car details and mileage will they tell you what due when etc?

they should but the same you can find using online ESS, guess they do the same way

I used Scotts Auto tek on dolly lane when I had my c350, decent outfit but not sure they are still around sadly.

The company you posted a link to should be more than capable.

Found someone not too far from me. Good to have another option.

Had oil change a few years ago by MB in Doncaster, I think it was around £250/300.
