CAT created noise?

My 1995 C220 petrol engine suffered a very gradual decline in power over many months. It never was very sporty when I got it 5 years ago but it ended up not being able to go over 25 mph. Another cat changed all that and it's quite a goer now. However, while with the old cat putting your foot down resulted in a lot of underlying noise from the engine and exhaust and a struggle to go faster, the new situation's more worrying.
Now kick-down results in a good surge of power and quick acceleration as well as a heavy rattling noise that seems to come from the engine at 3500 rpm or above...and not with any lower revs. Gradual acceleration makes no such noise.
Is this the fault of the new non-MB cat...the new one's half the volume and has an extra silencer box to make up the space...or is it something a blocked cat stopped me from hearing before?
I hope I haven't got an inexpensive cat and an expensive problem!

My engine also changes note at around 3500 rpm , almost as if something in the inlet tract changes , and only when being pushed , not when cruising above that speed .

The noise is coming from the engine area under the bonnet and it sounds like a really worn engine's small ends rattling away. Ease the pedal up and it goes immediately. It's the same with kickdown in any gear and it doesn't happen without the power from a kickdown.
I wondered if it was a back-pressure related thing.

A bit of a 'Wild One', but is your airbox all properly secured? Because it sounds induction related to me...... ;)

Buy an engine stethoscope and listen around the engine. A worn bearing will be immediately obvious.

Solved!

I had the very poor aircon regassed and it was still very poor. A weak compressor was diagnosed so I replaced it and, lo and behold, the noise I was banging on about stopped!
Thanks to everyone who wrote in and sorry for misleading you all.

oops 7 years old - missed that
