Cat "D"?

Ahhh but if you've got a paint thickness meter - not pointing any fingers at anyone here...

An easier way is to tap the panel with a hammer and listen to it 'ring'. Or so I'm told :)

Similiar mileage, age, spec just half price:D here http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/828098.htm
Maybe to cheap?

Lynall

That's the scam one back again.

Priced less than half it's true value, and no phone number to contact the seller....grainy photos (same ones as before...)

'I just need your bank account deeeeetails....and soorrrrt cooode.'

ALL PROPHETS OF DOOM!

Why do most of you think that it is cat this cat that! Maybe he backed into something or he backed another vehicle into the bumper and had it repaired without the use of the insurance company. After all if it came to a couple of hundred pounds to fix then this may be more or less what his excess might be. I am a little dismayed sometimes when most people are cynical regarding cheap cars. Please realise we are now in an economic downturn and the ars* has dropped out of the performance car market.

My E class left the factory with very thick paint on the roof over 240 on a gauge, its still never been in an accident yet has two new wings and extensive new paint.

A paint gauge wont tell you anything apart from the paint thickness, reading anything into that is supposition

The price alone should ring alarm bells

What is the thickness on the rest of the car, especially bonnet and boot.

I would be highly sceptical of it having a paint thickness of 240um of factory paint, for one reason it wouldn't dry well so would cause problems and runs.
It may well have been resprayed prior to sale.

I suspect it was damaged and repaired at the factory or perhaps a fault with the original finish either way it was done before it arrived at the dealer. I'm not suggesting it was part of the normal manufacturing process

I'm not certain of the paint on the other panels but think it was around 160 it was only measured as a precaution when machine polishing .

Of course due to rust repairs the bonnet and tailgate have both been redone the bonnet has been painted twice now

If you're seeing readings of 160um average across the car, either it's had a total respray or the gauge needs calibrating. Mercedes paint is supposed to be 80-120um factory finish. Most are within 95-110um.

As you say, paint thickness isn't proof of accident damage, but is proof of some repair work, which then needs investigation.

Where does he say Cat D?
Supposition again!

By phone Iain. Why the exclamation mark ?

It is Cat D

I have spoken to the owner as well. He says it is Cat D. Repaired and deemed suitable for the road. I have a friend in the motor trade who is trying to do an experian check but can't find it!

I am keen to have a look, after all these cars have dropped drastically in price and having spoken to the owner he is another victim of the credit crunch. I would arrange to see him at his house - without the cash on me!

The car pictured in the other advert was for sale in Derbyshire and sold on e-bay at £7,250 about a month ago. It was listed on pistonheads at £9000 previously. I spoke to the guy selling it prior to the e-bay listing at the time . He seemed genuine enough and the car checked out okay. The advert with the irish details is a scam.

Thanks for clearing that up about the Irish car trainer.

The other car is probably fine but I just wondered why (if its on the register) not just be little more upfront about it ?

I still cannot understand what Iain means saying "Supposition again!"

Bit touchy about something ?..........

Taken the plunge.

I spent several two weeks talking to the vendor about this car. I eventually went to see it on Sunday 11th January. Had a good look round, checked the repairs knowing it was Cat D and went for a spin.

The shut lines are great, repairs are excellent but a slight issue with bent on a tiny patch on the wing. all the Gizmos and gadgets work and she felt smooth. I was shown the reciepts for the last few services one of which replaced the water pump which I know can be a problem.

The vendor wanted to make a deal sooner rather than later and offered me the car foe £7k. Well I got the okay from Mrs Trainer over the phone and shook hands on the deal. Picked it up yesterday morning from wales and drove it back to Stoke. No problems.

Have been to Coventry and back today again no problems. I havent had the chance to set up the memory functions and need a second sim for the phone so I dont have to take mine out. Command works well and the elctric seat are great.

Oh, yes a small matter of the engine... it is great. I decided to floor it leaving the toll booth on the M6 and it was like going into hyperspace on Star Wars - where did all the other cars go. I was sensible most of the rest of the time with the odd splurge. On the way back to Stoke I amanged 26.5mpg even with the stop start rush hour traffic. Not dissimilar to the C320 I now need to sell.

I may have bought a future problem but then for the money I have paid I think I have actually got a good deal, only time will tell.

Bad spelling

Please excuse the spellings on the previous post.... very long day!

I've just bought a cat D motor.

It was only a D due to being stolen/recovered where the driver's lock and ignition were broken.

It was owned by my mate who had the work sheets from 03 when it he bought it.

Nowt to be scared of, and I paid 60% of the market value of a 'normal' model. Car's mint.

Thank you

Thank you fatherpierre that makes me feel better. I cant see the 65ish year old bloke I bought it from being a fly by night crook anyway.

I am looking forward to many a mile of happy motoring and upsetting the odd car that trys to push me along...

To me a cat D doesn't mean much, other than a cheaper car. Avoided by the trade like the plague, but to a knowing buyer they can be a bargain.

My car is completely mint and was repaired for under £400 after its theft.
