Chirping when idling

it will be the bearings going i one of the pulleys, best to find out which one and change it as in time the bearing will cease.

Thanks for your posts, you're all right I should have asked you earlier.Last night Alternator pulley sheared off while overtaking in the dark, had to abort the overtaking and lost the lights and steering. The good thing is that managed to limp home, the bad thing might have damaged the alternator.:wallbash:

When you say sheared off, has it damaged the shaft? I believe replacement pulleys are available, or if it is toast you could try a breakers.

What car is it for?

Why abort the overtake and did you lose lights and steering?

Diesel w203, apparently half of the pulley broke off and the other half still on the alternators shaft .I don't have time to tackle the job as I driving missis's car.

Just get a new pulley fitted in situ, no need to remove the alternator.

The pulley broke in half while I was overtaking and looks like some protection cut the lights off, didn't know what was happening so I slowed and had to abort overtaking used the emergencies lights to limp home.As the alternator belt came off the steering became too heavy ,and I struggling to negotiate the bends. The thing that worries me whether will be hard to remove the piece of the pulley which is still attached in order to replace it.

Not with the locking tool, or indeed a decent pair of grips now the ball race has collapsed.
