The later M271 engines (156bhp on the C180) as fitted to the W204 as of 2007 were slightly better, the hydraulic tensioner fails which is usually not as catastrophic as the sprockets failing. But no M271 engine is 100% safe, sadly. The M274 that replaced it in 2012-2013 is much better, though still suffering from thermostat failure (expensive part).

They have some issues with affected engine numbers in the 2007 year ish range . Camshaft or crankshaft problems (I can never remember which ) .
They are £600 tax bracket as well
