Cleaning brake dust - Black AMG wheels

Yup carbon collective is fine on Matt wheels,
But tbh as mentioned by others, if you wash your wheels properly on a weekly basis with a good quality APC and wheel shampoo you don't really need the coatings. They won't stop brake dust laying on the wheels, and don't really keep them any cleaner tbh.

I like this idea. I will have to consider this next time I have a car with pristine wheels or after a refurbish.

My wheels are a few years old with a few minor scratches. I have to admit I am a bit lazy when it comes to detailing. I protect the wheels using a simple spray wax (Armor All Shield) after washing with a mitt. It makes cleaning much easier because the dirt doesn't embed into the wheel. Waxing is simply spraying it on with no hard work of applying it.

However, over the years, I've probably spent more than the coating mentioned above.

To be honest I'm much the same, I used to use Dodo Juice Red Mist and now I'm favouring Meguiars Hybrid Ceramic Wax. So easy to use and creates a really nice slick finish.

I've always found with wheels, if you clean them regularly you don't need to treat them any different to the rest of the bodywork. Wash mitt and shampoo has usually been the case with the odd fallout remover if needs be. :)

definitely put a ceramic coating of kinds on after cleaning them, I did this on my E63 wheels and it worked better than not having any coating on, a lot easier to clean. The matt black finish is a pig to keep clean

Save your money on fancy products and get yourself a pressure washer instead. I'm sure you have some Fairy Liquid in the kitchen already ;-)
(as an impartial commentator - other brands of washing up liquid are also available)

have you ever used a fancy product on the wheels?

Not to clean crap off - basic detergents work just fine for me, but then I do clean my wheels fairly regularly and dont allow the crud to get baked on. I do see the merit of using some sort of sealer\coating though.

For a £35 investment for a few years of spraying the wheels with water to clean, and not having to then apply anything after for a nice finish it is definitely worth it

Edit- also not having to get on your knees or bend down and scrub/wipe them is definitely worth the £35! :D

I used one yesterday i picked up off ebay but i dont know,, it might get censored - Moose Piss worked well i just brushed it on .But you could use a spray bottle .

Dont buy this cleaner for your alloy wheels. The one that i posted about above. I used it yesterday a little at a time,, with a small container and a brush . It works very good,.. I then washed the alloys off three times after i had finished i left the container in the garage on my bench, with about 1/2 of cleaner in it . And as i picked it up to move it, it fell out of my hand on to the bench, spilling out the remainder,, it then it reminded me right away ,, that this alloy wheel cleaner had an acid smell to it,,, just like working on the battery . So not a good safe cleaner that i though it was .The seller said no harm will come to the alloys ,,,not true .

That stuff is marketed as a wheel cleaner when really it is just an iron fallout remover, you could use it safely on the whole paintwork.

Although it’s useless unless the material you’re spraying onto has already been thoroughly cleaned, and a tar & glue remover already applied and rinsed off. Tar deposits hide iron fallout

Two types of product that I would only use perhaps twice a year on my car, when decontaminating prior to sealing/waxing. A bottle like that would last me ten years!

I would not use it on anything on my car , but will be good to remove rust on nuts and bolts . It is nothing but acid .

Hi, I also have gloss Black wheels!. You need to get your wheels coated up with the KKD Revolve ( a member did mention this earlier)which in my opinion is the best on the market currently for wheel protection. Before that.......the wheels need to be decontaminated (Tar/Fallout remover)and clayed!. This will leave the surface free of contamination / then a thorough wipe down of the surface with a panel wipe of choice.....the surface is then ready for a coating!. After coating and leaving to cure the wheels will be ready for most things you can throw at them. The wheels will then only ever need to be cleaned with a pH neutral shampoo in your wash bucket. If your callipers are painted I would do the same to them also. Job done!. Using Fairy liquid and other chemicals mentioned on every wash will strip and damage the wheels very quickly.
Hope this helps
Paul.

I use ValetPro Bilberry Wheel Cleaner. I tried Bilt Hamber and didnt find it any better so I have gone back to Bilberry. Bilt Hamber is more expensive by a long way and smells horrible. :)
+1, Bilberry is great stuff. Occasionally use Iron fall out remover but for general clean then 2:10 mix is fine. Use 5% Atom Mac on the brake discs.
