I have a 2006 Clk 220 cdi with a 6 speed manual gearbox which when cold has a problem getting into reverse...just a bit stiff !. When warmed up it seems better.Having browsed t'internet , a lot of posts are about auto gearboxes atc.
How easy is it to change the gearbox oil , are any special tools required and would it be better for a local garage to do it.
Any preferred garage near Wellingborough , Northants ?

It may not be the gearbox but clutch drag ie not disengaging properly. This may show up more as no synchromesh on reverse. I may be wrong but I dont think changing the oil would help. I'd seek professional input.

Generally, tools required are: appropriate 'key' for plugs; drain receptacle; filling method.
Specific to your car I don't know anything else is required but the main variable car to car is access. If a lot of 'stuff' has to be removed first, then maybe better left to a garage (that can better deal with undertrays that hinge down).

Absolutely, remove the filler plug FIRST. Drain when warm.
In your case ( re cold engagement of reverse), take care to get the correct oil viscosity - consider the lowest if there is a choice.

Those boxes are known to be baulky/notchy when cold - my old slk was just the same - especially when cold
Apparently Redline MTL will cure or improve it.
Remember to remove the filler/level plug before the drain plug.

Thanks for that. It's what I thought.
I think I will try HA Lock in Rushden , heard good things about him. I would do it myself but no ramps and can't be bothered!...my days of scrabbling underneath cars are waning fast

When you look at MB's recommendations for manual gearbox oil the standard spec is 235.10 but there is a special thin oil 235.3 described as ServiceKit NSG for MBC (NSG270/ NSG400) ServiceKit = for cold shiftability.

Finding it outside of a main dealer will be near impossible though. In terms of viscosity the only match I've seen is Castrol Syntrans FE 75W which is 6.3 cSt at 100 Deg C and 32.2 cSt at 40 Deg C. This is very thin oil on par with ATF and the 235.10 oil is not much thicker. I wouldn't use anything else without comparing the viscosity specs. Forget anything like the usual 75W90 gear oil which is grossly too thick and completely unsuitable.
