cls 350
Hi everyone,

Bought a CLS 350 (272) 4 months ago. Been great. Have got the secondary CAT delete, X pipe and changed the rear mufflers. Also installed a clifford OEM alarm and tinted.

Issue is today, while in S mode, my car went in to limp mode, and then went I put it in N, and back to D, it did not move. Quite worrying especially as it was a busy roundabout.

After 20 secs I turned the car off and on again and things returned to normal.

I called the dealer who are confused about this but feel it may be related to software rather than a mechanical issue.

Your opinions would be appreciated. Thanks.

it sounds like a software issue, there may well be some kind of " reset " procedure that can be performed to clear this fault, but I would suggest getting to MB , plugged in and looked at asap...that isn't the sort of thing you want happening on a regular basis, that's for sure :)

Thanks. Went to dealer, code is turbine speed sensor defective. Common problem with Mercedes from my research.

Transmission is 722.9. Seen from posts that either the conductor plate needs to be replaced, which is okay, while possibility that valve body needs to be replaced. Also seen many complaints about this. They could not tell me as was told they would need to call the head office.

I need advice that Mercedes will release the conduction plate as realise that it is a theft part. However, there are companies that can alleviate the problem for much cheaper.

Advice would be appreciated.

Thank you so much. Maybe I should have bought an BMW is what I am thinking.

Follow up

Hi,

As a follow up to the above post. I was told that my car's valve body would need to be removed and the part number looked at to decide if the plate is available separately or if the valve body needs replacing.

I fought this with Mercedes, PS: I went to an independent dealer. I was told to take the car to Mercedes directly and they would then make a claim with the Mercedes head office, bit annoying.

If there is anyone with the 722.9 tronic transmission who has a CLS 350 2006, then would appreciate advice as to if the plate is available separately.

I was told by a variety of dealers different things, one said they have the plate in stock and even gave me a price. While another including my independent Merc specialist said that I need to remove the part before a decision can be made.

I'm so confused!

Please help

I have had the same experience with my 2006 CLK280.

As I understand it, a 722.9 gearbox with a VGS2 (or later) valvebody can have the plate replaced (which is what happened to my W209). The earlier version known as VGS or VGS1 apparently requires the entire vavlebody to be changed if the plate has failed.

When my car was checked on Star, the diagnostic message text stated it was VGS2. I also recall the datacard generated by a VIN decoder also stated VGS2 right at the bottom of the option list.

I am not sure, but I think 2006 builds should be VGS2.

Either way you really need to get in touch with a dependable indie e.g. PCS or Stevensons who should be able to be specific after their Star diagnosis.

You may need a valve body. It depends on the chassis number.

My ML cant have just the plate. It needs valve body too. I am re-building mine thiugh.

I'd had mine a month or two when mine went into limp mode but it was whilst I was driving it. Maybe not the same issue andn I apologise if I'm jumping in to this thread with something unrelated but all info helps I'd imagine. When I turned it off then back on it was OK until it happened next time. Happened a few times before I found the problem. I had a small leak around the turbo seals and it was apparently getting into the inlet port shut off motor which is directly underneath it. The seal got the repaired, the shut off motor got replaced and I've never had the fault since. Hope it isnt that for you as it was an £800 touch from a main dealer.

hi

hi,

thanks for the information. It's very helpful.

Did they do the Star diagnostics and did it have a similar/same code?

I've done tons of research in to this.

The conductor plate is a known issue with Mercedes, even newer ones.
There is also an issue of leakage as you mentioned, but I am hoping this is something they can look at while the plate is being changed to confirm.
Other concern is that I have called 3 different Mercedes dealers and have been told different things:

1. The valve body needs to come off to look at the number and then decide if a conductor plate is available separately.
2. I have been offered the conductor plate at another dealer for £540 + vat but told that it is a theft part so I need to show documents.
3. Another dealer has said the conductor plate is £245 + vat but it can only be repalced at a Mercedes dealer.

This all sounds like a game or cover up in some way.

As I pointed out to the Mercedes head office, this is a risk to self and others, and the plate fault has been well documented with a previous/current court case in USA.

Regardless, I feel this requires the expertise of a reliable independent Mercedes garage.

I am contemplating trying 'Stevenson's', despite me living in Wembley, but from the reviews I feel this might be a good option.

I have also looked on e bay and these plates are available separately, so that another avenue.

It's all v confusing.

Regardless, this needs to be sorted. I have already done exhaust changes, tinted, clifford alarm, and am looking to change many other things, so it just has to be done. Not willing to take it to a main dealer or stealer as they are known.

Thanks for the info though, much appreciated.

Stevensons changed my gearbox TCU. He had to take it to a MB Main dealer for the plate to be coded to the car as this has to be done whilst connected to MB servers in Germany apparently.

Whilst being coded, they also loaded the latest gearbox software and I must admit it is now a very smooth gearbox with most changes being imperceptible.

As you are in Wembley, would it not be worth calling Terry at Wayne Gates in Harrow?
They come highly recommended on this forum and could at least give you sound information.

Otherwise, I would recommend Stevensons.
