Engine is sometimes slow to start in cold.

Yesterday, it didn't start at all, so removed key tried again, and it started, no symptoms, drove fine, but CEL on all the way home. Got home, plugged into my OBDII machine, and comes up with P0335. Cleared the code, CEL gone and today no problems, although am worried I may get stranded somewhere soon!

It also showed the O2 sensor codes on the reader, which have been there for last few months.

Is it worth me just changing the o2 and the Crankshaft position A sensor to try to eliminate these faults?

Any advice or experience?

Also - when the car was cranking yesterday without starting the ESP inoperative sign came on. This immediately went when I restarted.

Hoping for help. Happy to change both sensors, at least to eliminate these as a cause. It has been on star before, and o2 sensor identified. Since, I have cleared the P0335 (crank shaft) fault, it has not come back.

Thanks in advance

Usually the ESP warning will come on as a result of poor voltage. Is she cranking with plenty of go?

Yep normally cranks fine, but when cold takes a while.

Edit: Not just when car is cold, I mean if weather is cold. If just starting in morning, and weather is fine, no probs.

We have seen a few lately taking time to start up due to faulty glow plug relays

Would that trigger a light?

And could that be linked to the p0335 code?
I would have thought if glow plug relay, the glow plug symbol should show up?

If the glowplug relay is faulty, it might not show up a light. We recently changed the glow plug relay on our 280 CDI that was faulty and no warning light showed-up. If the relay is faulty it should be changed quickly as extra cranking is not good for engine as it may cause further problems.

How did you narrow it down? Star?

I just changed my glow plug relay for the same reason. Cost around £120 for the part and a 15 minute job to fit it. No light showing on the dash, but was 99% sure of what it was, also picked up the fault on the code reader.

You need to get it on a star machine, code reader not the best for picking up that fault.
It will not always bring the light on if its faulty.

If I cleared the code on my code reader would it have also cleared on star?

Yes, STAR reported 'At least one of the glow plugs are not actuated' which meant glow plug relay and car starts fine now

My local indie had to decode the old one and re-code the new one, it was longer than 15 mins, wasn't this procedure used on your CDI?

No just fitted it, erased the fault code and it sorted the starting problem, no coding involved.

Glow plug relay does not require coding in, however the fault code does need clearing afterwards

That's strange, maybe a coding process was required for something as the car was in for service at the same time..

Hi, I know it's been a while.

Did you get this problem fixed and what did you get done?

Hi, Yes it was the o2 sensor...replaced it and all back to normal!!

Been such a long time ago I completely forgot I ever had this fault...STAR identified the fault. Invest in an indie with star and they will ensure you do not spend money where not needed!!
