I am probably going to leave myself open here but i picked up the above early in the week and have been manic all week with work and not had time to ascertain the following.

I was hoping someone can fast track me to the answers. I havent had time to read the handbook cover yet either.:fail

1) when driving in the dark the centre roof lighting consul is permanently on albeit very low in a horseshoe shape as ambient lighting. all the reading lights etc are off but can this panel be switched off or is it always on?

2) on the digital speedo clock in the middle on certain modes when driving I have the mph but also I have a constant kmh reading below it. I dont really want to see it. Is it a setting change I can do or not?

Thanks in advance.

superb car by the way, first merc and loving it!

Yes the horseshoe is always on but you can adjust how bright it is in the easy-to-use the back one has a button on it to adjust. You get used to it pretty quick :)

You're stuck with the kmh unless you get it recoded as being from another country by an indy.

Ambient lighting can be set to off in the cluster menu.

Thanks both. kmh seems a bit odd really but I can live with that no problem. Thanks for the heads up on the ambient lighting. Have found the setting and yes it can be turned off which it now is.

The car is going to get a proper clean tomorrow even though I have had it 5 days so will post some pictures up when its tip top.

The KPH is a legal EEC requirement for UK cars as the speedo only displays MPH.

Nothing to stop you getting it changed through coding though.

I actually liked the ambient lighting in my CLS and had it at the maximum setting, which for me was fine.

That does make sense now you say it as its always on the inside of analogue clocks.

I am fine with it and will forget about it now to be honest. Don't see any point paying to change it to outside temperature. Merc will probably say I have invalidated my Warranty if I did!

You might find that in switching off the ambient lighting, the puddle lights and red warning lights on the bottom of the doors when opened after dark (if fitted) do not illuminate. This is the case on the W211, maybe fixed/altered on later models. The interior and door lights both work off the switch on the door pillar.

To clarify my previous post. The values in the instrument cluster can be set below 1 or above 5, and this will show 'off' effectively switching off the ambient lighting.

If you switch off the automatic interior lighting on the overhead console then the interior lights and door lights will not function allowing stealthy entry and egress without any lighting. Leave this set to Auto and the interior lights and door lights will illuminate when you enter and exit the car.

Got confused with 'Automatic' and 'Ambient' :dk::dk:

thanks for clarrifying. i have now had chance to read the book and have a couple more questions

1) can you dim the rear horseshoe ambient lighting like you can the front?
2) I have two buttons on the rear lights in addition to the reading lights and I cannot find them in the manual. The symbols on it are like an empty Nike tick and one that is just like the black nike tick?

Can anyone help on that one. I have pressed them and cant see what they are / are not activating?

TIA

Was wrong about turning it off but as I said rear is definitely controlled by a button on the light unit itself, can't remember which one as I don't travel in the back :)

well done b1g1an. i have had another play and the two buttons that i described above are in fact the brightness for the rear so you can either match the front which is what i have done in the end or indeed turn them both off.

They do take a while when pressed though which is why i couldn't figure it out.

Cheers

Cool, I was more worried about them matching than the actual effect too :)
