E320CDi Estate - gone E320CDi Saloon - written off CLS 350CDi Coupé
So, I've had the CLS just over a week, and have clocked up over 600 miles, so far.

My initial thoughts are as follows:

Power and speed - even more grin inducing than the E-class E320CDi. Power seems to be delivered more smoothly in E, or when dropping a couple of cogs with the paddles. S mode is fun, and definitely more brutal than E. Certainly needs more self-control to avoid being over zealous.🙄

Comfort - generally, at least on a par with the E-class. Back seat passengers seem to have plenty of room and enjoy having their own space.
I have to drop the driver's seat as low as it goes. One issue, on a longer journey, my right ankle/shin area gets sore from hovering over the accelerator.

Creature comforts - much better than my old E-class! Love having full BT audio integration and the better satnav system. Also like the ILS headlamps, though not had much need to use them yet. The extra leather trim is also appreciated by me, if not the cows!

Road noise - a bit louder, to be expected from the larger wheels and tyres.

Ride - seems a bit more twitchy and skittish than the E-class. On rough surfaces, it almost seems to skip about. Also, those bl@@dy potholes are very much more noticeable!

Practicality - pretty much as good as the E-class, minus one gripe - nowhere specific to store my sunglasses.

Fuel economy - no worse than the E-class, if not, possibly a little (tiny) bit better.

Looks - I certainly prefer the look of the CLS to the E-class. I like how it combines some aggression with a certain elegance. Kind of like someone well-to-do that's ready to kick your teeth down your throat.😂

E-class vs CLS - I'm sold! I'd take another CLS in a heartbeat.

1. Try using cruise over long journeys. Use Plus and minus ,rather than using brakes to slow.

2. Hold minus paddle , car drops to lowest, safest gear for overtaking. Rather than using kickdown. Once released the gears go back upto 9th .

Good to hear you are enjoying the CLS. The interior is a very pleasant place to be, and its a great-looking car. I agree on the ride, its pretty unyielding with the AMG-Sport suspension. Watch for potholes as the wheels can bend easily (speaking from bitter experience!).

The LED headlights are brilliant and make such a difference on a long winter drive.

As above, the 19" wheels make for a very firm ride, even with Airmatic and they have a reputation for cracking and bending.

My previous (W219) CLS came with 19s and I swapped them for 18s, which made a huge difference. My current (W218) came with 18s, even though it has the 4.7l engine, and I'm really pleased it did. Better ride, better fuel economy, faster and cheaper tyres and less likely to break the wheels.

I'm seriously looking at a CLS 218 now....I was originally looking at E63 212......then I decided I preferred the shape of the 218 CLS so started looking at the CLS63. But now I've moved on from that. Due to a possible big change in my life (early retirement) I'm thinking that a thirsty sub 20 mpg V8 with near £700 road tax might not be the sensible choice ....financially at least....especially if we go with the second part of the plan...moving to Cornwall. So I'm pretty much decided on the CLS400.....seems to be a good compromise between power and running costs. The only slight negatives to me are the lack of three rear seats.....which won't affect me often and the slightly less practical boot.
Just got to find a nice one at sensible money....WITHOUT gloomy black interior. There is a blue with grey in the AT at Croyden at the moment....it's just getting the time to see it with my busy life!

What are you talking about? Sensible in retirement? That doesn't compute!

Maybe once I'm into it and settled......but until I know how much this is all going to cost me I think it's sensible to dial back the costings a bit. A CLS400 is still a very capable car.

CLS500 even more so...!

Three reasons for a "no" there....firstly is still the same £695 RFL as the CLS63, secondly the claimed mpg is actually WORSE than the CLS63 5.5 TT by about 4 mpg and finally the 500 was not available in the 218 shape CLS.....just the 219....and no offence to any owners I could not live with that front end and those pig ugly headlights! Each to their own though..

219 terrible car , hotchpotch of parts from 211 that were left over ,a hurried project from mb I thought.

I did say each to their own!. Personally I think its a far better looking vehicle.....I think there are more 212 parts than 211....but I'm no expert.

Sorry....misread your post...thought you said 218.....so I agree 100 percent! Must replace these glasses!

There was a 500 sold as a 218 here but only pre-facelift and only on the Coupe. Same 4.7L engine as in jdrrco‘s SB unicorn. Very rarely seen for sale though; 400 replaced it and the petrol 350 on the facelift.

Everyday is a school day!...never seen one for sale in AT.

Probably not the first time 😂😂

Hate to say this but Cornish roads are appalling (CLS400 may have 19s), narrow with hedge rows.

Heresy I know, but a car with more sensible tyre depth and a higher ride height is more suited to Cornwall....:(
