Comand problems after AA Jump-start

I have an early 2007 E500 Estate. I've been enjoying it for 10 years.

Had an AA jump start last week and since then I've had a few issues with the Comand unit. First I noticed the GPS wasn't working. Also the steering wheel volume control not working and maybe as a root cause the Comand itself switch on and off with the ignition. I can start it manually and all the music options and phone are fine but adfter a while it says "please turn on ignition otherwise the unit will power down"

Makes me think this isn't a GPS issue as such more the case that Comand lost touch with something else in the car

Any ideas on a fix?

Thanks

David

You may have some 'ghost' faults stored due to low/flat battery. Maybe even a duff small battery. Checking voltages and clearing the faults would be the first things I would do.

That doesn’t sound good. You have to be very careful how you jump start these cars or the electronics can be damaged. There’s loads of warnings in the manual about it. I would be having a word with the AA about it. Also as above, make sure the second battery is fully charged as it feeds all the cars systems.

Hi,
How old are the batteries on the car? are they due for a change as the 211's are very greedy for battery power. The jump start has probably corrupted something somewhere and I would disconnect the batteries and let us the systems reboot themselves, this obviously means that you will have to reset the windows etc but no great problem. Do you have any diagnostic toys to put on it ? That may also help if the battery reset doesn't help. Once connected back up I would check the battery voltage, needs to be near 13 volts at rest and 14 volts when charging. I always have one of the cheap voltmeters from Ebay in my fag lighter socket just to keep an eye on things.

Thanks all. I've always taken the car to the garage to get fixed but think I will have to start learning how to do some things for myself - resetting windows for example - and get myself a voltmeter. Ref the AA I have checked in the manual and they did things in the right sequence so will give the reset option a go as I don't have diagnostic tools. I will give the battery disconnection option a go and report back on progress!

Thanks for the patience with a novice!

Hi all. Problem solved. I found that ejecting and then replacing the DVD fixed the GPS and also fixed the Comand switch on and off issue. Nice and easy in the end!

Get yourself a multimeter if you like ,but if you intend to keep the car get a proper OBD scanner such as MBicarsoftII, much better, and unless you know what you are doing a multimeter you could end up confusing things even more. Good luck. and welcome along.
