Hello,
I’m new to MB, my first MB which is a Mercedes E250 CDI SE Estate 2014.
So far I’m very pleased with car, I’m slowly getting to grips with Mercedes idiosyncrasies such as a foot operated parking brake amongst other things.

I have a couple of questions regarding the Command system.
Im a UK owner and was wondering how the traffic messages supplied via Tom Tom are updated, is it via the radio TMC or cellular ?.
Ive searched various forums however i cant seem to find a definitive answer.
My next question is does anyone know what the number two signifies on the Command startup screen ?

A quick bit about me, I’m an electronics/network engineer and i also own an old Alfa Romeo GTV 3.0 so I’m handy with the spanner’s and tracing Italian electrical faults !
i hate joining forums and going straight for the “help me i cant find” but i have spent hours searching and the dealer is clueless .

If you look in the handbook, or download it via the Mercedes app onto a smartphone or tablet, it says that Dynamic route guidance is from the communications module which has an integrated SIM card. But this is a subscription service which was included in the purchase price of the car for the first 3 years. If you want to renew it you have to contact Mercedes or your local dealer. TomTom will not provide it. Comand can also receive RDS-TMC traffic reports, but the simultaneous use of both services is not possible.
I don't know what the 2 on the home screen is but if I find out I will let you know. I haven't noticed 2 on my home screen but I will check it out when I next use the car

We just renewed our Tom Tom live traffic on our 2014 SLK. You need to create an account on the Mercedes Me Portal and purchase through that. I know others have had problems with this but for us it was very simple and straightforward

@comandonline are the best people to ask on here.

Never seen the 2 on any of the last the MB’s I’ve had either.

I have TomTom live and once the 3 years is up will definitely renew it.

As it’s live traffic I assume it’s updated via GPS.

There is a dedicated COMMS module which has a 3G sim in it and connects via a HSD cable (using USB protocols) to the head unit. Car comes with a 3 year subscription to live traffic and you can then renew via the mercedes me portal (website). Its a 3G sim in UK, not necessarily everywhere.

As years went by the COMMS module gets more and more functions, and now you have something called 'Mercedes Me' which lets you remotely lock/unlock, see location etc (and presumably gives Mercedes lots of service data etc) - the latest E class even lets you remotely park the vehicle.

The COMMS module talks via mobile data to the Daimler Vehicle Back End (DvB) which knows what services each car supports / has / ...

I hope that helps

Cheers

Richard,
Thanks for the excellent information, you’ve explained it succinctly in a few lines where as the dealer didn’t really have a clue.
I think the manual i downloaded was more USA centric than UK and i did the typical bloke thing, a quick glance at the manual and dive in !
The live traffic worked perfectly today and rerouted me due to heavy congestion .
