I've received this for as long as I can remember (been working full-time in IT since 1978), filling out the renewal every year.

Just got the following email
Dear MR xxxxxx;

Unique Reference Number: xxxxxxx;

I am writing to advise you that after reviewing your application you no longer qualify to receive a complimentary subscription to Computing at present. If you would like to continue receiving a regular weekly copy you will need to use the link below and complete the subscription form.

http://xxxxxxxxxxx

I appreciate that being asked to pay for a subscription is disappointing news so with this in mind I would like to offer you an annual subscription for only £60 (usual rate £100) that’s a 40% saving!

etc.

WTF??!

I never take mine out of its packet... I read the Dilbert cartoon on the back through the clear plastic and then throw it in the bin.

Annually they ring me and ask if I have time to do a survey. I decline and they then tell me that my free subscription will end if I don't do the survey. I tell them that's good news and they still keep sending me it. :confused:

The Register is a far more informative read.

TBH I usually just read the Dilbert too, so no great loss. Nothing has changed in my job within the last 3 years though, so I wonder why I'm suddenly no longer entitled to a copy. £60 to subscribe? I don't think so!

I quite like Computing, but they struck me of a while ago after I wouldn't answer their. Shame as I always liked the jobs section.

Got back on the list for IT Week but can't remember if I tried for Computing or not.

Shouldn't be any problem, most likely that you didn't get to talk to them to 'renew' your free subscription. They just confirm the usual details then ask as stupid audit question like what month or city where you born in.

I stopped getting it for a little while, although bizzarely there was a period when I got two copies every week!. Anyway I still regulalry get Computing & IT Week amongst others. Not got Computer Weekly for a while though...

Just as a follow up to this, having ignored the email and received no magazine since the beginning of July ... guess what, it started arriving again last week :rolleyes:

I get Computer Weekly's online subscription. PDF format, I think, and no need for binning a largely unread copy every week. It's free - just visit their website and sign up.

They did this to me about 200 years ago and I just didn't bother anymore. they quietly dropped it as I guess it affected circulation. In those days people only read it for the jobs.

Haven't bothered with Computing or Computer Weekly since going freelance 12/13 years ago and the job adverts didn't interest me. Still cherish this Dilbert copied from a colleague's copy in 1998. Reminds me of what permies think is the reason I do this job :D :D

Hello,

Agree with some others, it arrives at desk you flip it over read the Dilbert cartoon then file it...

Occasionally even keep the cartoon if relates to you / colleague / company

£60 a year for that, no thanks...

It is good to read when you travelling by air or train. You get some IT news which might be useful.
I always do that, same with the Oracle magazine too.

cheers Jib
