Took the right rear wheel off my new (for me) W123 this morning to check (and lube) the wheel bearings, and also find the source of a scraping coming from that area. What I found was so shocking, I'm still realing.
Found the most spectacular CV joint failure I've ever seen. There was a hole torn in the housing, and one of the balls came out of a bearing and was poking through the hole. When I wiggled the side shaft, the entire shaft shook like it was no longer aligned in the joint.
What was most shocking, was that I have driven nearly 100km with the CV in that condition, without knowing it. It was obviously an old injury, and I cannot believe how the previous owner could have driven a car like that.
Was wondering if anyone else has seen any similar failures on CV or U joints.
