CV Joint failure

Took the right rear wheel off my new (for me) W123 this morning to check (and lube) the wheel bearings, and also find the source of a scraping coming from that area. What I found was so shocking, I'm still realing.

Found the most spectacular CV joint failure I've ever seen. There was a hole torn in the housing, and one of the balls came out of a bearing and was poking through the hole. When I wiggled the side shaft, the entire shaft shook like it was no longer aligned in the joint.

What was most shocking, was that I have driven nearly 100km with the CV in that condition, without knowing it. It was obviously an old injury, and I cannot believe how the previous owner could have driven a car like that.

Was wondering if anyone else has seen any similar failures on CV or U joints.

Front drive shaft failed spectacularly on a Citroen belonging to on of the girls at the staled when my horse is kept the other day....luckily she was at the end of the drive going slowly when it happened or it could have been much more serious.
