The dirtier the better...makes cleaning it so much more fun.:p

Looks like a diesel spill from the filler flap area.

Rear mudflaps would help somewhat.

One of the biggest drawbacks with estates I think. I had the same problem with the tailgate on my Volvo V70, it always seemed to get dirtier than the rest of the car in this type of weather. Must be the air turbulence. :dk:

It is Grump - you don't see saloons (a very few) with rear wipers fitted, for just that reason.

Hatches/estates always have them.

I thought that too. The flap sits a little proud and I think has caught the airflow. I don't think it's diesel...

The flap is probably prod because the cap isn't right and the staining is probably diesel. A little goes a long way.

What is it you want detailing, the shirt?

Flap is always proud, but cap seems ok. It wasn't turned to the final click though, so might have seeped out that way.

What's wrong with my shirt dm?

I often thought about fitting a genuine volvo spoiler, mounted at the top of the tailgate, which some V70's had factory fitted, thinking that it may help lessen the muck drawn up off the road. You could watch the spray swirling up behind at moderate to fast speeds. Never got around to it though.
Thinking about it, I can't remember ever seeing a Merc estate fitted with one.

I have done 2k miles over the last 2 weeks up and down the country, the car is filthy - never seen it so dirty.

Off to the handwash over the next day or 2 as, tonight I was finally 'Driving home for Christmas'.
