E 220 CDi Coupe 2013
Caught up with an old friend at the week-end as he turned up in his new Mondeo Tdci, asked him what happened to the C220cdi estate? (new only this year)

He was totally disappointed with the fuel economy, could only get a max 40 mpg on a run, often less, so that combined with total dismay at the dealer, he got out of the car.

I get 48 - 50 mpg on my regular week-end run, he said it is the new engine modifications in the facelift model that have changed things - anyone else had this experience?

The Euro IV engines will be slightly more thirsty than Euro III ones, but only by about 3-4%

How does that work? I would expect newer engines to become more efficient.

I have a pre face lift C220 CDI and never have been too impressed with the economy figures... which I also said in other posts.

What do you get?

My 1994 E300 diesel estate gives 36mpg mixed use commuting (20m town;12m motorway) and about 41mpg on a long motorway run. Mind I'm not a fast driver (in this car). But this is a W124 barge and it is 11 years old. I rest my case!

I get about the same, but I do drive with a very heavy right foot!

He might have been a bit hasty, they take a while to loosen up.
I had one - did about 38/40 at first but after about 7,000 miles i saw up to 55mpg....

I had a C220 CDI loaner in January and I absolutely roasted it on the motorway etc, still managed to get about 46mpg from reset according to the computer. It had about 5k on the clock.

hmm , euro 4 engines suck when it comes to economy ...

another wonderful EU directive thats got absolutely no point!!

Just one of those things im afraid ....

HaHaHa!!!

I admit things have "improved" but...
What I was trying to say was that whilst manufacturers have got better at passing the fuel tests, in the real world things are different. The point is that an 11 year old 136bhp 3 litre diesel engine attached to a fully loaded up W124 estate can produce these sorts of mpg figures. Also, when I examine the fuel consumption data that came with the manual, the figures seem to be almost spot on for real world use, not something that happens all that often nowadays. Fuel economy is supposedly getting better, but its not as much as the manufacturers' test figures would have you believe.
I could have bought a new E class estate, but decided to buy an old one and leave the money invested elswhere. It's a personal decision, and one that I don't regret one bit.

If only W124s had CDi technology....

Whats the reasons behind this though. Im baffled. How can something burning more be more effeicient???

There is a good right up (new What Car) on the 2.9cdi that replaces the 270cd1 says its more refined than the 320cdi and not much difference in its performance.

No idea , i recon the engine is retared with the particle filter they have to fit , thus they need to tweek more power out the engine..

Go figure , my 2.7 cdi does 50mpg+ easy on any day of the week. The last E class we had struggled to do 33-35 mpg..

Only difference , apart from one being a bigger engine  is EU3 and EU4 engines. Dealer was sick at the sight of the 220 cdi with me complaining about the mpg. Eventually sold it..

Was the Merc auto and the Mondeo manual?
Mondeo TDCi Auto's are noted for poor fuel consumption (as are BMW diesel auto's). I gather Merc's don't vary that much (between man and auto)?
My C270 auto estate (coming up for a year old and 14,000miles) will do 47-49 on a long, steady, motorway run. On commuting though, it's 33-35.

I had a C220CDi auto estate demonstrator for a few days that had done 200miles. I put 600 more on it (mostly motorway) and it did 30MPG. However I did drive it pretty hard.

How old was your E220CDi - I thought that EU4 was only (pretty) recently intoduced?

Was a 2004 model , so the S211 , it was an EU4 Engine. It replaced an S210 220 CDI EU3

Dunno about the mondeo model, think as someone else has sasid that it would have loosened up a bit.
